News on Offense:
After attending the game on Sunday, I can see why second baseman Robel Garcia is struggling. I believe Garcia swung at every pitch in the two at-bats that I saw (he might have taken one pitch). He was swinging at balls off the plate, in the dirt, you name it. Since he is off to a slow start, I believe he is starting to press a little in the box.
An MRI revealed that outfielder LeVon Washington has a torn labrum in his hip. That is a huge blow to the Captains lineup (as well as LeVon). Washington previously had surgery on his hip following the 2010 season. At the time of the injury, Washington was hitting .440 with eight runs scored and a RBI in just six games. Hopefully, this is just a minor set back in LeVon’s developmental path.
Hitter of the Week: Luigi Rodriguez
Rodriguez tore the cover off the ball this week going 11/28 (.393 AVG) and stealing four bases. When he gets on base, he makes good things happen for the Captains.

News on Pitching:
A week after having a team ERA around three, the Captains pitching staff went into a tailspin this week. The pitching staff had a combined ERA of 7.29 (having a game where you give up 22 runs did not help matters). The bullpen’s ERA was 12.27, while the starters had a respectable 4.34. It appears when the starters hand the game over to the relievers, pandemonium breaks loose (with exception of maybe two players). Overall, the pitching needs to get better in order to win games and help build the confidence of these young prospects.
Two players in the bullpen had great weeks. Francisco Valeria and Kyle Petter were Mr. Reliable for the Captains; Valeria went five innings and gave up one earned run and struck out four. Petter was his usual self going two innings of scoreless/hitless ball and striking out three.
Sunday afternoon was a game to forget for the pitching staff. Cody Anderson, making his second professional start, pitched okay; he went five innings only giving up four earned runs (three of which came on homeruns). Kyle Blair relieved him and all madness broke out. Blair gave up 13 earned runs in only 3.1 innings. Blair also gave up three homeruns. In defense of the homeruns, the wind was blowing out toward center at roughly 15 mph, so anything that was hit into the wind stream carried. Jeff Johnson finished out the game with two thirds of and inning pitched and gave up five earned runs.
Pitcher of the Week: Will Roberts
Roberts was the only good thing to come out of the pitching staff this week. Even though he lost one game, he had a miniscule 2.13 ERA in 12 2/3 innings pitched. He struck out eight and walked only three.

Not sure how big a prospect he ultimately turns into, but he's definitely a help...
