DAYTON - The Lake County bats came alive for 14 hits in Dayton on Wednesday night as they downed the Dragons in a 5-3 victory.

The Captains scored first as shortstop Francisco Lindor and catcher Alex Monsalve hit back-to-back singles with one out. Left fielder Bryson Myles, who just returned after missing a week with a hamstring issue, kicked off his comeback with an RBI single to third to plate Lindor, giving the Captains a 1-0 lead.

Starting for Lake County was Felix Sterling who had yet to record a win despite several good outings.  Sterling surrendered one run in the first inning as he allowed Dayton shortstop Juan Perez to single with one out and scored after an error and an RBI groundout off the bat of second baseman Ryan Wright.

Dayton scored again in their half of the second as Sterling allowed back-to-back singles. Right fielder Kyle Waldrop grounded into a force out to advance left fielder Juan Silva to third, and Silva scored on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Junior Arias to give Dayton the 2-1 advantage.

Lake County responded in the third as they snagged three more hits from Dayton starter Justice French. Lindor led off the inning with his second hit of the night and stole second and Monsalve singled to left. Cue Myles, who didn’t seemed too impaired by his hamstring as he legged out a double to center to score Lindor. Right fielder Jordan Smith pushed another run across the plate with a sacrifice fly that scored Monsalve, giving the Captains a 3-2 lead.

The Captains’ half of the fourth inning was quicker, but they still inflicted some damage as third baseman Leonardo Castillo homered for his first long ball of the year, but Wright offered a rebuttal in the form of a solo shot to left during the Dragons’ half of the fifth inning to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Captains.

French was pulled during the sixth after relinquishing a lead-off single to second baseman Robel Garcia. French was replaced by Brooks Pinckard, who was greeted with a line-drive single to right by first baseman Jerrud Sabourin. Castillo added to his good night with a single to score Garcia, increasing the Captains’ lead to 5-3.

That was all Sterling needed to pick up his first win of the season as he made it through 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.

Sterling was replaced with Rob Nixon in the sixth inning. Nixon tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless ball, giving up two hits and walking one.

Right-hander Jeff Johnson closed things out for the Captains in the ninth as he posted a perfect line and struck out two to pick up his second save of the season, sealing Lake County’s 5-3 win.

Lindor hit 3-for-5 on the night to boost his average to .327 and Myles marked an excellent comeback with a 3-for-4 night that included two RBIs.

The Captains continue the three-game series with the Dragons on Thursday in another 7:00 pm start. Lefty Elvis Araujo (0-4, 2.49) is scheduled to start for the Captains against right-hander Radhames Quezada (0-3, 2.88).
