SALEM, VA - The Carolina Mudcats used a late rally to down the Winston-Salem Dash, 11-9, on Saturday night.

Down by two runs going into the eighth, the Mudcats used some timely hitting to level the game and ultimately take the lead.

A leadoff single from Luigi Rodriguez in the top of the eighth and a Jerrud Sabourin walk set up the first scoring chance for the Mudcats. After James Roberts advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, Alex Monsalve blasted a double down the left field line to plate two and tie the game. A wild pitch advanced Monsalve and a sac fly from Logan Vick scored the catcher, giving Carolina the lead.

Carolina added an insurance run in the top of the ninth thanks to reliever David Putman’s shaky command.  Two wild pitches from Putnam allowed Yandy Diaz to advance to third and then score to make it 11-9.

Jacob Lee entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and allowed a Dash runner to reach second with only one out, but came back to force consecutive ground outs and earn the save.

Carolina starter D.J. Brown took a no decision after a poor start in which he surrendered eight earned runs off of eleven hits in 4.1 innings.

Michael Peoples (4-7, 4.88) hurled 3.2 innings of relief and gave up only a single run on his way to the win.

Winston-Salem starter Jeffrey Wendelken allowed six earned runs off of eight hits in 4.1 innings of play. Braulio Ortiz (0-8, 5.15) received a loss and blown save after he gave up one earned run in the eighth.

Earlier in the game, the Mudcats found themselves down by four quick runs from the Dash. A first inning score from Jacob May off of a Jason Coats ground out got Winston-Salem off to a good start.

Three more runs from the Dash in the bottom of the third put the Mudcats in an early hole. May tripled to right to leadoff and a wild pitch from D.J. Brown allowed him to score. Later in the inning, the Dash used three consecutive singles to load the bases to set up another scoring opportunity.  A Keon Barnum walk and a Grant Buckner ground out plated two more to make it 4-0.

The Mudcats responded with a leadoff double and score from Yhoxian Medina in the fourth inning but the Dash fought back harder by adding two runs in the bottom half.

Carolina countered by posting six runs in the top of the fifth. With two runners on after consecutive singles, Logan Vick singled to right to score one and Joe Sever grounded into a force out to plate another. Yandy Diaz then used a single of his own to bring Vick and Yhoxian Medina around to score two. A Jeremy Lucas single scored Sever to tie and a Luigi Rodriguez ground out brought the go ahead run around to score.

Carolina now held a 7-6 advantage but the Dash would regain the lead in the fifth with two additional runs and a score in the sixth to make it 9-7 and set the stage for the dramatic comeback.

The Mudcats will be back in action on Sunday against the Winston-Salem Dash. Right-hander Cole Sulser is set to take the mound for Carolina.

Daniel is a communication and broadcast media major at North Carolina State University.
