WINSTON-SALEM, NC. — Despite losing an early lead, Eric Haase’s RBI single in the top of the ninth pushed the Carolina Mudcats ahead for an 8-7 victory over the Winston-Salem Dash Friday.

Carolina was in control early, with the Mudcats bats jumping all over Dash starter J.B. Wendelken in the top of the first. Yhoxian Medina opened the contest with a base hit up the middle before Yandy Diaz quickly put the Mudcats ahead with a two-run shot to right. Later in the inning, Torsten Boss doubled the advantage, unleashing a homer of his own to right plating Alex Monsalve as the Mudcats grabbed the 4-0 lead.

Winston-Salem got one back in the bottom of the frame, as Trey Michalczewski scored Keon Barnum from first with a two-out double off Carolina starter Mike Clevinger.

The Dash cut into the Carolina advantage even further in the bottom of the second. With one away, Clevinger plunked Nike Basto then allowed a double to C.J. Beatty as Winston-Salem put a pair in scoring position. Keenyn Walker then plated Basto with a groundout to first as Beatty took third. This allowed Adam Engel to bring the Dash within a run, singling to right as Winston-Salem cut the Carolina lead to a single run at 4-3.

Clevinger took no decision, allowing three earned runs on four hits in 2.2 innings of work.

James Roberts gave the Mudcats a little more breathing room in the top of the fourth, doubling to right off Wendelken as Luigi Rodriguez scored to make it 5-3.

In the top of the sixth, Carolina rallied again as Joe Sever and Boss led off with a pair of singles, then moved up a base on a throwing error. James Roberts then struck again, singled up the middle to plate the duo as Carolina went ahead 7-3.

However, the Dash would certainly make things interesting, battling back in the bottom of the seventh. With Cole Sulser on the hill, a pair of singles and a fielder’s choice gave the Dash two in scoring position with one away. Barnum walked to load the bases, before Michalczewski plated two with a single up the middle. This forced Carolina to turn to Jacob Lee, who forced Omar Navarez to groundout. But Jake Peter followed with a single to right as Barnum scored to make it 7-6.

An inning later, Beatty led off with an infield single then took second on a wild pitch from Lee. Desperate to advance the tying run, Walker turned to small ball, putting down a bunt. But a throwing error from Lee allowed Beatty to come all the way in to score as the Dash evened things at 7-7.

But luckily, Scooter Tucker’s club had an answer in the top of the ninth. Logan Vick earned a walk off Adam Lopez before Medina moved him into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Diaz lined out to put the Mudcats down to their final out of regulation, but Haase provided the heroics singled to left as Vick scored the go-ahead run to make it 8-7.

Josh Martin (5-6, 2.97) put down the Dash in the bottom of the ninth, grabbing the victory with 2.0 shutout innings in which the right-hander didn’t allow a hit.

Lopez (0-1, 4.50) took the loss for Winston-Salem, allowing the one earned run on two hits in 2.0 innings.

The Mudcats improve to 28-31 on the second half, trailing the Salem Red Sox by 2.5 games in the playoff race.

The series continues Saturday as Carolina sends D.J. Brown (2-7, 4.41) to the hill against James Dykstra (3-2, 4.93) in a righty-righty matchup.

First pitch is set for 7 PM.
