WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. —The Carolina Mudcats completed the sweep in their final road series of the year, defeating the Winston-Salem Dash 6-5 in twelve innings.

Jerrud Sabourin’s one-out single plated Yhoxian Medina for the winning run as the Mudcats dropped the Dash for the fourth consecutive day.

Winston-Salem drew first blood, grabbing a sizeable early lead off Carolina starter Dylan Baker in the third and fourth. Zach Voight and Adam Engel led off with base hits, before Jake Peter plated Voight with a single to left. After a pair of fly outs, Omar Navarez doubled the advantage, scoring Engel with a single up the middle as the Dash went up 2-0.

An inning later, Nick Basto and C.J. Beatty led off with singles, then each advanced on a wild pitch to Mike Marjama. Voight then reached on a Medina throwing error as Basto and Beatty came in to put Winston-Salem up 4-0.

This would be all the damage done to Baker, who earned no decision after going 6.0 innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits while walking three and fanning one.

Baker had an opportunity to pick up the win, with Carolina rallying in the tops of the fifth and sixth. With one away, Yandy Diaz singled to left then stole second. Sabourin’s double then got the Mudcats on the board, before Torsten Boss brought in Sabourin with a single to right making it 4-2.

With Adam Lopez on the hill for the Dash in the sixth, Logan Vick led off with a walk before a Medina base hit and Diaz walk loaded the bases. Sabourin then came through again, plating Vick on a groundout to short. A wild pitch to Boss then plated Medina to tie the game, forcing Winston-Salem to turn to Jose Bautista. Bautista walked LeVon Washington to load the bases, before Bautista hit Luigi Rodriguez allowing Diaz to make it 5-4.

But Winston-Salem wouldn’t go down without a fight, finding the equalizer against Clayton Cook in the bottom of the eighth. Navarez led off with a double to right, then moved up to third on Basto’s groundout to first. Beatty then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to right making it 5-5.

The stalemate would go all the way into the twelfth, with both teams refusing to yield ground in the Southern Division playoff race.

With Zach Isler on for the Dash, Medina and Diaz put men on the corners with a pair of one-out singles. Sabourin then finally broke the deadlock, driving in his third run of the evening with a single up the middle as Medina made it 6-5.

Grant Sides retired the Dash in the bottom the twelfth, picking up his sixth save of the year.

Isler (1-8, 5.54) took the loss for the second straight evening, allowing the one eraned run in an inning of work.

Benny Suarez (2-3, 3.72) picked up the win for the Muddies, pitching scoreless bottoms of the tenth and eleventh to set the stage for Sabourin’s late heroics.

Carolina improves to 31-31 for the second half. They are 1.5 games behind the Salem Red Sox for the Southern Division’s final playoff position.

The Mudcats will now head home to end the regular season at Five County Stadium.

The home stand begins with a four-game set against the Lynchburg Hillcats. Adam Plutko (3-9, 4.20) is set to start Tuesday’s opener for the Mudcats against Lucas Sims (7-10, 4.24).

First pitch is set for 7 PM.
