Wilmington, DE - The Carolina Mudcats dropped a Friday night game at Frawley Stadium to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 6-2. The loss was the sixth straight for the Mudcats, tying a season-long.
The Mudcats (17-18, 49-56) jumped out to an early lead when Delvi Cid scored from third on a throwing error by third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert. However, the Blue Rocks (18-16, 47-57) responded with crooked numbers in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to pull away.
Michael Goodnight (2-10) suffered another loss after allowing only two runs over five innings. The right-hander allowed five hits, walked two and struck out six.
Brooks Pounders (4-3) held the Mudcats offense to one run over six innings while scattering four hits. He fanned six hitters without issuing a walk.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Wilmington put together three straight hits, including a triple by Orlando Calixte, to stake a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth inning, Jose Bonilla roped a triple down the first base line to plate two more runs against right-hander Grant Sides. Sides allowed his first home run as a Mudcat when Matt Fields sailed a blast over the left field wall for a 6-1 lead in the seventh.
Delvi Cid led the Carolina offense with a pair of hits. He stole a game-high three bases. Justin Toole finished with a pair of hits as well.
Carolina and Wilmington face off in game two of the series Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. The Mudcats return home July 31 to host Myrtle Beach for three games. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
