Mudcats drop seventh in a row

ZEBULON, N.C.-The Lynchburg Hillcats swept the struggling Carolina Mudcats on Monday night with a 7-4 victory at Five County Stadium, running Carolina’s losing streak to 7 games.
 
Right-handed pitcher Nick Pasquale (0-1) made his starting debut for the Mudcats and took the loss. Pasquale tossed five innings, allowing five runs on eight hits.
 
The Hillcats started right-handed pitcher Navery Moore (3-4) who struck out a season-high of seven batters. Receiving the win, Moore finished with two runs on six hits in six innings.  
 
The Mudcats took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, when shortstop Francisco Lindor scored on a RBI double by first basemanJerrud Sabourin.
 
In the top of the second, shortstop Elmer Reyes hit a two-out single on a line drive to Mudcats’ left fielder Zach MacPhee that scored third basemanKyle Kubitza and designated hitter Ross Heffley, giving the Hillcats their first lead of the ballgame at 2-1.
 
Carolina tied the score in the third when right fielder Jordan Smithcontinued his hot hitting with a double to centerfield that brought home Sabourin, making the score 2-2.   
 
The score remained tied until the Hillcats took the lead again in the fifth inning. Reyes started the inning with a line drive single and was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Cory Brownsten. Centerfielder Matt Lipkasingled on a ground ball to Lindor that put Hillcats at the corners. 2nd baseman Emerson Landoni doubled on sharp ball to left field that scored Reyes and Lipka. The Hillcats earned their final run of the inning when Landoni manufactured a run when he got to third base on a ground out, then scored on a balk by Pasquale. Lynchburg led 5-2 going into the sixth inning, and would never look back.
 
Right-hander Enosil Tejeda relieved Pasquale after tossing five innings for the Mudcats. Tejeda pitched a scoreless sixth inning before he was replaced with lefty Francisco Jimenez.
 
In the seventh inning, the Hillcats put the game away. With one out, Lipka and Landoni singled, and first basemanWilliam Beckwith followed with a line drive RBI single to right field, bringing the score 6-2. Right fielder David Rohmreached base on a throwing error by Lindor and scored Landoni, making the score 7-2.
 
Carolina Manager David Wallace was frustrated about sweep and the team’s offensive performance. “It’s not all about the pitching or on the pitchers. The offense has left players in perfect scoring position” said Wallace.
 
Lindor started the bottom of the eighth inning with a lead off double to end the hitless drought; his first hit in 12 bats. Sabourin followed with a line out to center field that advanced Lindor to third. The streak continued with an RBI double from Smith, but Smith was left on base at the end of the inning. The Mudcats trailed 7-3 going into the final inning.
 
With one out and no one on, MacPhee homered on a missile to right field off of Lynchburg closer John Cornely, bringing the score to 7-4. Centerfielder Tyler Naquin singled on a line drive and with Lindor at bat, Naquin advanced to second base on a defensive indifference. Lindor singled to left field. Lindor and Naquin were stranded on the corners when Jerrud Sabourin struck out to end the game 7-4, giving the Hillcats the four-game sweep.      
 
The Mudcats are back in action Tuesday night against the Salem Red Sox to continue their fifth of seven straight home games. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
