Frederick, MD – The Carolina Mudcats stormed out to an early 7-0 only to watch the Frederick Keys roar back to claim a 9-8 win on Friday night at Harry Grove Stadium.
The loss marks the third straight defeat for Carolina (11-10, 43-47). All three losses were by one run. Frederick improves to 11-10 in the second half, and 38-53 overall.
Eric Beaulac (1-0) picks up the win by tossing a scoreless inning. Kyle Blair (5-2) takes the loss after allowing two runs over 2.2 innings. Ryan Berry pitched a perfect ninth for his seventh save.
Trailing 7-0 going into the last of the fourth inning, the Keys were jump-started by a home run from Ty Kelly. With two outs, Frederick put together five straight hits to plate four runs, and cut the deficit to 7-5.
Ronny Rodriguez homered to lead off the fifth inning, but the Keys stayed on course. A two-run blast by Aaron Baker, his Carolina League-leading 20th of the year, pulled Frederick to within one.
A bases-loaded walk by Kelly tied the score 8-8 in the sixth, and wild pitch in the seventh allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Giovanny Urshela paced the Carolina offense with a home run and four RBI. Tony Wolters and Bo Greenwell finished with three hits apiece. Greenwell drove in three runs.
The Mudcats continue their series at Frederick on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.
