Winston-Salem, NC — The Carolina Mudcats fell 7-5 to the Winston-Salem Dash after blowing an early lead on Saturday night. The Dash took the lead in the seventh inning with three crucial runs that ultimately proved to be too much for the Mudcats to handle.

With the game tied at four, Catcher Mike Marjama opened the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot to left to put the Dash on top 5-4. Later in the inning, Tim Anderson reached base on a single up the middle and was then scored on a Courtney Hawkins double up the left field line. Jason Coats finished the big inning by bringing Hawkins home with an infield single.

The Mudcats began to rally in the following frame after a Winston-Salem starter, Myles Jay, was replaced by Zach Isler. Despite two quick outs, Jeremy Lucas doubled down the third base line and was scored on a Jerrud Sabourin single to cut the deficit to two runs.

James Roberts fly out to second ended the inning and Carolina’s chances of a comeback.

Winston-Salem’s Braulio Ortiz earned the save by keeping Carolina from scoring in the top of the ninth.

The loss drops Carolina to 27-33 and Winston-Salem improves to 25-36.

Carolina starter Cole Sulser took a no decision after giving up four earned runs off of seven hits in 5.0 innings. Sulser fanned seven batters and surrendered only a single walk during his outing.

Right-hander Clayton Cook (0-2) pitched 2.0 innings of relief and gave up three earned runs off of four hits en route to his second loss of the season.

Dash starter Myles Jaye produced a solid outing and was credited with the win. Jaye held Carolina to two earned runs off of five hits in 7.0 innings.

The game was a tightly contested battle throughout and started with four combined runs in the opening frame.

The Mudcats looked strong in the top of the first and put two quick runs on the board. Carolina put runners on the corners behind a LeVon Washington single and a fielding error from Courtney Hawkins that allowed Todd Hankins to reach first. Erik Gonzalez brought Washington and Hankins around to score with a single to make it 2-0.

The Dash added their own two runs in the bottom half of the inning. A double steal from Courtney Hawkins and Jacob May put two runners in scoring position for Winston-Salem. Joey DeMichele then knotted the game at two with a double to left to score Hawkins and May.

Both teams continued to trade punches in the following innings.

Carolina used another Winston-Salem fielding error to score Jerrud Sabourin in the top of the second to take a 3-2 lead before Winston-Salem responded in the bottom of the third with a score from Jacob May to tie the game.

The game wouldn’t stay deadlocked for long as Luigi Rodriguez sent a home run over the wall in left to put the Mudcats ahead 4-3 in the top of the fourth.

But the Dash would find an answer again in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game before eventually taking the lead in the seventh inning.

Jacob May went 2-for-4 with a double and scored three runs on a fantastic night for the Dash.

The top four batters of the Winston-Salem order combined to go 8-for-14 with four RBI and six runs scored.

Carolina faces Winston-Salem again on Sunday afternoon. Adam Plutko is set to start for the Mudcats and will face Tyler Danish.

Daniel is a communication and broadcast media major at North Carolina State University.
