ZEBULON, N.C.- The Carolina Mudcats finished their series against the Lynchburg Hillcats Wednesday night at Five County Stadium, defeating the Hillcats 5-4.

Starting right-handed pitcher Michael Peoples tossed 5.1 innings for the Mudcats, allowing four earned runs on five hits.

Reliever RHP Rob Nixon (2-3) took the win thanks to the rally after holding the Hillcats off the board in the top of the eighth. Nixon pitched one inning allowing zero runs on two hits.

Right-hander Jarrett Miller (3-2) started the game for the Hillcats, allowing four runs on five hits over six innings, but it was RHP Nate Hyatt who suffered the loss, tossing one inning with an earned run on two hits.

The Hillcats hit the scoreboard early in the first inning with a home run off of a fly ball to left field from center fielder Will Skinner. The Mudcats went three up, three down in the bottom of the first, leaving the lead to the Hillcats, 1-0.

After a quick scoreless second inning for the Hillcats, the Mudcats attempted to tie the score starting with a soft line drive double by right fielder Jordan Smith. However, Smith was left on second base at the end of the inning.

The third inning was almost a duplicate of the second. Peoples kept the Hillcats from any potential hits as the batters went down 1-2-3. Center fielder Tyler Naquin tripled on a sharp fly ball to right field with two outs but was left on base to end the third inning. The score remained 1-0, Hillcats leading.

Both teams had an uneventful fourth inning, each going three up, three down on offense.

The score stayed 1-0 in favor of Lynchburg until the Mudcats came back strong with an offensive inning in the fifth. In the top of the fifth, Peoples sat the Hillcats batters down three in a row for the fourth inning in a row.

Left fielder Bryson Myles started the Mudcats' offense, reaching on a fielding error by the Hillcats third baseman. Designated hitter Bo Greenwell followed Myles and reached first on a walk. Myles and Greenwell stole third and second base respectively with second baseman Zach MacPhee hitting. MacPhee was eventually walked. With bases loaded, Naquin grounded out to second base that scored Myles and moved Greenwall to third and MacPhee to second. The score tied the Mudcats and Hillcats, 1-1.

Shortstop Francisco Lindor added to the Mudcats score hitting a two-run triple on a sharp fly ball to center field. Catcher Tony Wolters followed Lindor’s streak with a RBI double to end the fifth inning and the Mudcats leading the game 4-1.

The battle was on in the sixth inning as the Hillcats tied the Mudcats 4-4. Skinner came in the clutch for the Hillcats, hitting his second home run of the game, earning the three runs the Hillcats needed to tie the game.

The seventh inning started and ended with a tied score, 4-4.

The Mudcats broke from the tie in the eighth inning when Wolters singled on a soft ball to left field that scored second baseman Joe Wendle. Wolters' RBI completed the final score for the Mudcats 5-4 over the Hillcats.

The Mudcats ended the game with five runs on 10 hits with no errors while the Hillcats had four runs on eight hits with an error.

The Carolina Mudcats are back in action Thursday night, July 4th, hosting the Salem Red Sox. The first pitch of the four-game series is schedule for 7:15 p.m.
