In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @AndrewIBI.

Here are the stories from Monday, March 3rd.

Top Stories:

  • Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reported that the Orioles are nearing a minor league deal with former AL CY Young winner Johan Santana.

Tribe News:

  • Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reported that right-hander Frank Herrmann, who is nearly a year removed fromTommy John surgery on his throwing elbow, worked an inning in a simulated game on Sunday. Herrmann threw 21 pitches and has been hitting around 92-94 mph on the radar gun.
  • The Indians announced Monday that their April 4 home opener against the Twins sold out in 15 minutes. This will be the 22nd consecutive home-opening sellout and the 21st straight at Progressive Field.
  • The Indians announced their television schedule for the upcoming season. SportsTime Ohio will air 154 games, while FOX has picked up Cleveland's June 21 game against the Tigers for a national broadcast. FOX Sports 1 will also air games 6 games.

News and Notes:

  • ESPN's Jayson Stark wrote that although the Braves lost Tim Hudson to the Giants via free agency, the theory that the club lacks an ace is overblown. Stark argued that Kris Medlen has developed into that type of pitcher for the team.
  • Twins officials denied having interest in Joe Saunders to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.
  • The Rangers have claimed infielder Andy Parrino off waivers from the Athletics, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. To make room on the 40-man roster, Derek Holland has been placed on the 60-day disabled list.

Yeah I feel like you can count on one hand how many deals have worked out with a pitcher that were for five or more years in free agency. Very few come to mind. Even four years is a risk these days.

i am not certain whether johan or cc was the first 20 milion a year pitcher but that is why it is such a crap shoot to give a pitcher that kind of money not to mention it is 750k a start which is unreal cost but one pitch can tear up elbow or the shoulder and you still owe the money

I believe you can still get Opening Day tickets from the Indians but only if you buy a season ticket package.

Really hope the Tribe gets off to a good start. Obviously you always want that but after making the playoffs last year think it's even more critical this year. We did see some nice crowds early on in 2008 after they made the playoffs the previous year ...only way we'll see more fans is if we can get some sustained success.

For those who didn't see Jon Heyman said Trevor Bauer was sitting 96-98 on Sunday. Interesting he seems to have picked up (returned) the premium velocity with the adjustments to his delivery. I don't think he's quite ready, but I believe Bauer will find some consistency and emerge by mid-summer.
