MLB Storylines: Extension talks with Kipnis ongoing

In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @AndrewIBI.

Here are the stories from Monday, March 31st.

Tribe News:

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that although an extension with Jason Kipnis has not been completed, it is still possible that a deal could be reached during the season. 
  • Manager Terry Francona indicated to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com that Michael Bourn could make a swift return to the lineup once he is eligible for activation from the 15-day disabled list. Francona said Bourn might suit up for Triple-A Columbus, which is scheduled to open its season Thursday. 
  • Because of rain during during Monday's pregame workout, the Indians were forced indoors. As a result, Jason Giambi was unable to advance to batting practice on the field. Giambi, who is eligible to be activated Saturday, said he continues to feel good in his recovery.

News and Notes:

  • Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reported that Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein stated that he will no longer publicly address the team's plans regarding top starter Jeff Samardzija during the season. 
  • Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reported that outfielder Brennan Boesch will stay with the Angels organization after not making the club's Opening Day roster. 
  • The Mets have signed Bobby Abreu to a minor league deal, the club announced. 
  • Brewers general manager Doug Melvin confirmed to Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel that his club has tabled its extension talks with shortstop Jean Segura
  • The A's have signed right-hander Joe Blanton to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento, the team announced. 
  • Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reported the Rangers claimed backstop Chris Gimenez off of waivers from the Athletics. 
  • The Red Sox announced that Shane Victorino will open the season on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain and Jackie Bradley Jr. will begin the year with the big league club. 
  • Toronoto shortstop Jose Reyes was placed on the 15-day disabled list after re-injuring his left hamstring in the first inning of a loss to Tampa Bay.
