In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Friday, March 7th.

Top Stories

  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that Ervin Santana has now changed gears and is now looking for a one-year deal. According to Rosenthal, Santana wants to sign as soon as possible and will not wait until after Opening Day to sign with a team. Royals general manager Dayton Moore told Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star that the candidates for the Kansas City rotation are in-house and the team does not intend to try to re-sign Santana, even if he is willing to accept a one-year deal.
  • Kansas City manager Ned Yost told reporters on Friday that pitcher Luke Hochevar will indeed undergoTommy John Surgery and will miss the 2014 season. Hochevar was originally going to try rest and rehab for the first few months of the season to try to repair sprained ulnar collateral ligament

Tribe News

  • Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer wrote that while Carlos Santana has looked natural at third base in practice, he has looked "stiff and uncomfortable" in games. However, Tribe manager Terry Francona said on Friday that he has been impressed with how Santana has handled third base, and the team will move forward with his transition to the hot corner. Francona also said that there will be a meeting in the next few days to map out a plan for the rest of camp.
  • Cleveland won their eighth straight Cactus League game on Friday, beating the Cubs 7-2. Mike Aviles hit a two-run homer, while Carlos Carrasco and Corey Kluber combined for eleven strikeouts in six innings. Indians pitchers have not given up an earned run in the last 26.1 innings.
  • In the second inning of Friday's game, Ryan Raburn crashed into the right field wall as he was trying to chase down a homerun hit by Kris Bryant of the Cubs. Raburn initially stayed in the game, but was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of third. He was diagnosed with a left knee contusion and is considered day-to-day.
  • Fifth-starter candidate Shaun Marcum will throw his first live batting practice session of the spring on Tuesday.

Others News and Notes

  • The Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with lefty reliever Oliver Perez on a two-year, $4.25 million deal.
  • According to Corey Brock of MLB.com, Padres outfielder Cameron Maybin will not need surgery on his ruptured left biceps tendon.
  • Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reported that San Diego has informed third baseman Chase Headley that they fully intend to make him a qualifying offer after the 2014 season.
  • Former Rockies closer and Indians reliever Rafael Betancourt will work out with Colorado in the near future as he attempts to land another MLB job after Tommy John Surgery late last season.
  • The Royals have released pitcher Brady Penny, who was in camp on a Minor League deal. Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reported that Kansas City told Penny he didn't have a good shot at making the team and the two sides agreed to part ways.

This must be how he proves he's not cutting and pasting. Whatever puts money into the writer's pocket. Do you guys have to share your salaries with the originators of all this information? Just wondered how the royalties work. I come here every day looking for original thought, and get this forum fodder instead. Sometimes less is more.

If Santana wants a one year deal look for the Orioles, Blue Jays and others to jump in and try to sign him.

Good deal for the Dbax. Perez will add a solid LH option in their pen.

Question: By "Brady Penny," do you mean former Marlin, Dodger, and Tiger Brad Penny?
