In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Monday, March 9th.

Top Stories

  • The Braves have yet to receive word on the extent of the damage to Kris Medlen's throwing arm, but things didn't get any better for their pitching staff on Monday. Starter Brandon Beachy was forced to leave his start early due to tightness in his bicep. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweeted that he has heard that the Braves may now be making a run at Ervin Santana. MLB.com's Mark Bowman wrote that Atlanta is indeed interest in Santana, with financial concerns and draft pick compensation being the main limitations at this point.

Tribe News

  • Cleveland's Cactus League winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. In the 8-3 loss, Trevor Bauer was hit hard in his two innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out one. Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweeted that Bauer's velocity was once again in the mid-to-upper 90s. Jason Kipnis led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
  • Danny Salazar made his Cactus League debut in Monday's game, going 1 2/3 innings and allowing one run on two hits, while walking two and striking out two. After the game, Salazar said that his arm and elbow "felt great." Cleveland is taking a cautious approach with the flame-throwing Salazar this spring in anticipation of having him make around 30 starts in 2014.
  • Carlos Santana got some action at the hot corner on Monday, fielding three ground balls cleanly and making smooth, chest-high throws to first on each one.

Others News and Notes

  • Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com tweeted that Mariners scout have "been religiously attending Mets games" this spring. New York is known to have interest in Seattle middle infielder Nick Franklin, so it is believed that the Mariners scouts are trying to determine a fair asking price for Franklin.
  • According to Jon Morosi of FOX Sports, the Tigers are looking at their own personnel while also monitoring some outside alternatives in the wake of the Andy Dirks injury. Currently, Detroit has two former Indians in Ezequiel Carrera and Trevor Crowe battling for a chance to platoon with outfielder Rajai Davis.
  • Reports yesterday stated that the deal between the Cardinals and Cuban infielder Aledmys Diaz was for four years and less than $20 million. That report was true; however it was much less than $20 million, as St. Louis was able to land Diaz for four years and $8 million.
  • Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com tweeted that there is lots of trade interest in Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli and that the White Sox are one of the teams monitoring him this spring.
  • The Braves acquired Minor League pitcher Zach Stewart from the White Sox in exchange for cash.

Still think that if the Tribe ends up deciding on Santana at 3B that Francisco Cervelli would be a decent grab to backup Gomes. Not holding my breath it happens but has shown the ability to start and wouldn't be a terrible bench option if healthy.
