MLB News and Rumors: Vogelsong re-ups with Giants

With the offseason now in full spring, news will continue to become more and more frequent. In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to
tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

With no major trades or signings on Friday, there are no “top stories”.  Instead, I will just give a rundown of news and notes.

Here are the stories from Friday, November 29th.

News and Notes

  • The Giants and pitcher Ryan Vogelsong agreed on a one-year deal to bring the righty back to San Francisco.  The contract guarantees Vogelsong $5 million with incentives that could earn the starter $7-8 million.  Earlier this winter, the Giants turned down a $6.5 million option for Vogelsong, but elected to bring him back on a deal for less guaranteed money.
  • Dionisio Soldevila of ESPNDeportes.com reported that Hanley Ramirez recently said he has had ongoing conversations with the Dodgers about a possible contract extension.  Under his current contract, Ramirez will be eligible for free agency following next season.
  • The Royals announced that they agreed to a two-year extension with General Manager Dayton Moore.
  • Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times says that the Rays will re-sign Juan Carlos Oviedo, formerly known as Leo Nunez.  Oviedo spent the entire 2013 season as a member of the Rays, but did throw a single pitch, as he was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
  • Chris Cotillo of MLBDailyDish.com reported that Edward Mujica is being pursued by the Orioles, Indians, Cubs, and Phillies.
  • Cotillo also tweeted that Angels starter Jerome Williams’ agent Larry O'Brien said, "I certainly hope Angels don't tender Jerome Williams. There are many teams he could effectively start for."
  • According to Venezuelan newspaper El Univeral, Miguel Cabrera has told the Tigers that he would like to return to first base.
  • Troy Renck of the Denver Post is saying that the Rockies plan to make a serious run at free agent first baseman Justin Morneau.
  • Chicago Cubs pitching coach Chris Bosio said that relievers Pedro Strop and former Indian farmhandHector Rondon could compete for the closer’s role for 2014.

I think that the Twins are making a big mistake to offer 3yr deal after coming off a 14 loss season with the Yankees. I guess there desperate for pitching. The probably could have gotten better quality deal with Kazmir.

After the non tender date Dec 2nd do people believe activity will pick up this week before the winter meetings.? At the winter meetings? Week after the meetings?

I'd agree, 3 yrs seems unlikely for Mujica. Although maybe an option yr would seem to be reasonable, I can't see the Tribe committing much cash to the bullpen over more than 2 yrs. Javier Lopez got 3/$13 M and Smith 3/$15.25 M so it would be reasonable to think Mujica would get a three yr offer near there from somebody other than the Tribe.

Mujica is relatively young, he will be entering his age 30 season, has been consistent and is coming off a career yr. It seems like his mkt is probably as high as it is going to be. This being said, I think he signs with Philly - they seem to throw out cash for BP arms (Adams, Papelbon).

Tony,

you think it's a possibility the Indians will non tender Pestano??

Not sure I see a logical fit with Mujica. If he indeed gets a deal for 3 years and for close to what Smith got, I'm don't see it being with the Indians. They wouldn't go 3 years for Smith, so why 3 years for Mujica? Especially when Smith is better and a longer track record of success.

I think we could see the Tribe get something done with Mujica. Maybe 3yrs /$14 M gets a deal done for (Moo-hee-kah). He's been relatively reliable over his career, has seemingly improved yr-to-yr and is coming off of a yr with a sub 3 era and 37 svs. Even with that, Smith was considered a better RP than Mujica by many national rankings. I'd like to see the Tribe land Mujica or maybe Jose Veras to fortify the 8th inning or CL role.

The non-tender deadline is fast approaching (dec.2nd). The winter mtgs are dec. 9-12th and the rule 5 draft (dec.12th). The Tribe should be very active in the days to come, with decisions on non-tender candidates Stubbs, Marson, Pestano, Tomlin, Wood and Hermann. Marson and Hermann seem most likely to be non-tendered, IMHO. Both are returning from season long injuries, Marson would probably be lost, but Hermann would seemingly make it through waivers.

I can not picture Rondon being closer for the Cubs. He still has command issues. Who know over time he might become closer similar to what happened with Mujica.

Interesting another team develops the talents of Mujica and how the Indians are considering having him back.

Only 2 closer I like in FA market is Balfour and Nathan.

I'd be interested in Mujica. Will be interesting to see what kind of $ he can get. Cotillo also mentioned he could net a deal similar to Joe Smith. If that's the case I wouldn't expect the Indians to actually be "in" on him.
