MLB News and Rumors: Haren heads back to the West Coast

With the offseason now in full spring, news will continue to become more and more frequent. In this new MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

Here are the stories from Sundday, November 24th.

Top Stories

  • A bit of a slow day on Sunday, as the only major news was that the Dodgers reached an agreement with pitcher Dan Haren.  The deal is for one year and $10 million, with a vesting option for 2015 if Haren can throw 180 or more innings in 2014.  Haren was vocal this offseason about how difficult it was for him to pitch so far away from his family this past season while he was with Washington.  His family lives in California, so Haren going back to the West Coast is no surprise, although I did predict that he would be an Indian in my top 50 free agent predictions.
  • The only other free agent news of the day was that the deal between Jhonny Peralta and the Cardinals, which was reported on Saturday, became official on Sunday.  Peralta will be guaranteed $53 million over four seasons.

Other News and Notes

  • Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reported that the Rays have re-signed catcher Jose Molina to a two year, $4.5 million deal.
  • Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com says he has heard from sources that the Blue Jays are attempting to put together a package of young players to acquire Jeff Samardzija from the Cubs.
  • Nick Cafardo is reporting that Jarrod Saltalamachia is on the Twins radar, as they look for a new catcher after moving Joe Mauer to first base full time.
  • Jon Heyman of CBS Sports wrote that Japanese officials from Nippon Professional Baseball will be in New York this week to try to negotiate a new posting system with the MLB.  Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanakawould be one of the top free agent pitchers available if the MLB and NPB can work out a deal that will allow the pitcher to be free to sign with an MLB team.

From a position player perspective, yes Ron, we have some solid depth coming up and some guys who could be impact everyday players or others who could be complementary everyday types. They need it. They also have some bullpen depth. The big problem continues to be high quality starting pitching though. Not much of it from the top down.

Tony,

Do you see the talent starting to mature in the minor leagues to the point that there will be a steady stream of players competing for roster spots on the Indians 25 player over the next few years.

The idea of a steady talent pipeline from the minors to the majors would have to be looked as a success of this current group.

It has been weak over the prior years, with the exception of last year.

Richard, still on the fence regarding a prospect book for 2014. I think it is safe to say that even if I do it, it will be much different this year.

Are you going to do a prospect book for 2014. I hope you do.

Tony,

that could be the case but I also think that the bidding wars, escalating prices of players is prompting teams to make deals early and get out rather than stay and pay bigger money than they want for the same players. It was reported that SF Giants insisted on this in the Tim Hudson negotiations when they insisted on him making a decision by a specific date and then they were prepared to move on

Not sure how to feel about the Haren signing. $10M for him on a 1 year deal is great IMO, way better than Johnson's deal in San Diego. But man, $10M for a guy that is your #4 or #5 starter? O to be that rich....lol

There has been a lot more activity this year with free agency and trades than I recall in recent years. With the Winter Meetings a week later this year and teams/players feeling shutout at the end of the meetings in the past, perhaps teams are trying to ensure they have some things done before it and then just use the meetings to see what else they can do.
