In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

With no major signings or trades occurring on Thursday, there are no "Top Stories." Instead, I will give a rundown of all of the day's news and notes.

Here are the stories from Thursday, January 9th.

News and Notes

  • Masahiro Tanaka arrived in the United States to start meeting with MLB clubs. According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, Tanaka could meet with as many as a dozen teams by Friday. Heyman says the Dodgers, Angels, Cubs, White Sox, Yankees, and Diamondbacks all have meetings set with Tanaka.
  • Justin Verlander underwent successful core muscle surgery on Thursday, due to an injury suffered in late December during his offseason training program. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said he fully expects Verlander to participate in Spring Training and be "in a position to compete at the beginning of the 2014 season."
  • Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com reported that Alex Rodriguez may be willing to forego an appeal to his suspension if it is significantly reduced. Arbitrator Fredric Horowitz is reportedly close to making a ruling on Rodriguez's 211-game suspension.
  • In an appearance on a Pittsburgh morning radio show, Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage said that he expects A.J. Burnett will retire.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported that Johan Santana expects to throw off of a mound this month, and the lefty will either sign with a team and complete his rehab with that team, or wait until he is fully healthy to showcase for teams.
  • The Nationals agreed to a Minor League deal with infielder Jamey Carroll. According to multiple reports, Carroll was choosing between the Nationals and the Indians.
  • Jayson Nix agreed to a Minor League deal with the Rays.
  • The Tigers agreed to Minor League deals with invites to Spring Training with former Indians Trevor Croweand Ezequiel Carrerra.
