MLB News and Notes: Mulder drawing interest in comeback

MLB News and Notes: Mulder drawing interest in comeback

With the offseason now in full spring, news will continue to become more and more frequent. In this MLB News and Notes segment, I will be giving occasional reports on the latest news and rumors throughout the MLB. I also will try to tweet news and rumors as I see them, so feel free to follow me on Twitter: @ajnicholsIBI.

With no major signings or trades occurring on Friday, there are no "Top Stories." Instead, I will give a rundown of all of the day's news and notes.

Here are the stories from Friday, December 27th.

News and Notes

  • Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe tweeted that the Angels appear to be the favorites to land pitcher Mark Mulder, as he attempts to make a comeback. Mulder is 36 and is said to be looking for a Minor League deal with an invite to Spring Training. According to Brian Charles, Mulder's agent, the pitcher has offers from several teams and has not yet decided who he will sign with.

  • Rangers general manager Jon Daniels told reporters that he expects Nelson Cruz to sign elsewhere.

  • In other Rangers news, Texas designated first baseman Chris McGuiness for assignment in order to make room on the 40-man roster for newly signed Shin-Soo Choo. McGuiness was selected in the 2012 Rule 5 draft by the Indians, but was sent back to Texas after not making Cleveland's 25-man roster in the spring.

  • Mike Puma of the New York Post says the Mets remain in contact with the Brewers, Orioles, and Pirates about the possibility of trading first baseman Ike Davis.

  • The Angels signed Chris Volstad to a Minor League deal earlier this offseason, but they will not release him so that he can sign an offer with the Doosan Bears of the Korean Baseball Organization.

  • Former Rays outfielder Sam Fuld is reportedly weighing offers from five different teams. Each offer is a Minor League deal with an invite to Spring Training.

As a note, I will be out of town for a few days and will be unable to write this piece. Once I return, it will be New Years Eve and then New Years day, so I plan on having MLB News and Rumors return on the morning of January 3rd. If the Indians are involved in any signings, trades, or rumors, the IBI will have you covered from all angles. Happy New Year everyone!

Walter,
I'd suggest they might be in on Sam Fuld. They reportedly had interest in Franklin Gutierrez. There are several guys I think they could sign to minor league deals that might provide some upside...Jeff Francouer (had Lasik surgery this offseason), Tyler Colvin (power potential), Brennan Boesch, Chris Coghlan (former ROY w/ Marlins), and Roger Bernadina.

I wonder if the Indians are one of the 5 teams that have offered Fuld a minor league contract.

Just guessing but the Tribe probably has kicked the tires on Mark Mulder, he's been out of huge game a while, but that only tells me he's got a fairly fresh arm, some rust, but a bit of veteran savy too. If he doesn't work as a SP, maybe he finishes his baseball career as a LH out the pen. Either way, he's a low risk signing for whoever signs.

I'm curious to see if the Indians have any interest in Chris McGuinness or if they feel they have enough internal options. Just saying the Tribe might consider it. I'd guess a team like the Brewers, Pirates or Orioles might have some interest too.

I think the Indians should look at Mulder. The guy is in great shape and looks like he could walk out there and throw a shutout. Could be a LHSP sleeper- right up Antonetti's alley. I am sure Jason Giambi could make a call...
