Troy, NY-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are on a mission to prove that the first few weeks of the 2014 season was a fluke. The Scrappers who came out of the gate struggling, have turned things around 180 degrees. With a 1-0 shutout win over the New York Penn League’s top offense, the Scrappers have now won 12 of their last 18 games while making a serious push at the wild card.

The Scrappers and ValleyCats put on a pitching display on Wednesday night in Troy, NY. The Scrappers through the first 6 innings were held to just 4 hits and stranded 4 runners on base.

The scoreless game would finally see a run on the scoreboard in the top of the 7th inning. D’Vone McClure started the inning by doubling to rightfield, his 5th double of the season. Austin Fisherthen followed with a perfect sacrifice bunt to move McClure to third. With 1 out and Yonathan Mendoza up, ValleyCats reliever, Vince Wheeland would send a wild pitch to the backstop allowing McClure to score the lone run of the game.

The Scrappers pitching staff made sure that 1 run would be enough. Jordan Carter, making his first professional start, was outstanding. Carter 5 innings while only allowing 4 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out 4. Twice Carter was able to work out of a jam with ValleyCats in scoring position to keep the game scoreless.

Jose Zapata (1-2) would follow Carter in relief. Zapta went 2.2 scoreless innings. He allowed just 2 hits and struck out 3 without walking a batter while earning his 1st win of the season. Luis Gomez was called on with 2 outs and the tying run at firstbase in the bottom of the 8th. Gomez promptly struck out the Astros’ #1 draft pick, Derek Fisher, to end the inning.

Gomez then was relieved by JP Feyereisen (2) in the 9th. Feyereisen would allow 2 singles, but would strikeout the side to end the game and pick up his 2nd save of the season.

The Scrappers will continue their road trip with game 2 at Tri-City on Thursday night at 7:00. If you can’t be at Eastwood Field or on the road, catch all the Scrappers games this season with Tim Pozsgai on Sports Radio 1240 AM.
