Niles, OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers were finally playing a team not named Auburn, Batavia or Jamestown on Monday night. The bad news was that they were playing the Williamsport Crosscutters who entered the game with the second best offense in the NYPL. That offense pounded out 15 hits on its way to a 8-1 win over the Scrappers.

Juan Santana (0-4) started for the Scrappers and was unable to get out of the first inning without allowing a run. A 1 out error allowed Jiandido Tromp to reach base. The error would prove costly when Derek Campbell doubled with 2 outs to give Williamsport the early lead.

Santana saw the Crosscutters add another run in the top of the 2ndinning. Rhys Hoskins started the inning with a double, one of 2 on the game for Hoskins. He would then score on an RBI single from Drew Stankiewicz to put the Scrappers down 2-0.

Mahoning Valley’s had an opportunity to tie the game up in the bottom of the 3rd inning. With 1 out Austin Fisherand Greg Allen each singled. Both runners would move up a base on a groundout. Then with 2 outs, Bradley Zimmer walked to load the bases. Francisco Meji would follow by hitting into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

The Crosscutters would start to pull away in the top of the 4th inning. After a leadoff single, a second Scrappers error would put two runners on base with no outs. Williamsport was able to capitalize with an RBI single from Stankiewicz and a 2 run double from Tromp.

The game was put out of reach in the top of the 7th inning. With 1 out, the Crosscutters put together 4 straight hits, highlighted by an RBI double from Hoskins to break the game wide open at 8-0.

The Scrappers were able to avoid the shutout in the 7th inning. Taylor Murphy started the inning with a single. He would move to third on a double from D’Vone McClure. A Drake Roberts RBI ground out would bring in Murphy with the Scrappers lone run.

Santana went 5 innings in taking the loss. He allowed 9 hits and 5 runs, only 2 earned. Santana struck out 3 while not walking a batter. Luis DeJesus relieved Santana in the 6th inning. DeJesus would allow 3 runs, all earned, on 5 hits. He struck out 1 and did not walk a batter. Dominic DeMasi worked the final inning for the Scrappers. DeMasi allowed 1 hit but no runs. He recorded a strike out and no walks.

The Scrappers will look to avoid the sweep when they conclude their home stand on Tuesday night at 7:05. If you can’t be at Eastwood Field or on the road, catch all the Scrappers games this season with Tim Pozsgai on Sports Radio 1240 AM.
