State College, PA- After seeing their game against Staten Island get rained out in the 2nd inning on Monday night, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers were more than ready to play on Tuesday night in State College. The Scrappers got their best overall performance as the handed the State College Spikes just their third shutout loss at home, 5-0.    

The Scrappers would strike for their first, and game winning run, in the top of the 4th inning. Bradley Zimmer singled to start the inning and then quickly stole second. With two outs David Armendariz singled to rightfield to score Zimmer for a 1-0 lead.    

Mahoning Valley would add on in the top of the 5th inning. With 1 out, Greg Allen would single. Allen promptly stole his 19th base of the season. He would then score on a 2 out single from Zimmer, making the score 2-0.

Two more insurance runs were added by Mahoning Valley in the top of the 6th inning. With two outs and Taylor Murphy and Austin Fisher on base, Yonathan Mendoza would single to leftfield scoring both runners and pushing the score out to 4-0.

The Scrappers final run of the night came in the top of the 9th inning. With two outs Steven Patterson singled. Zimmer would follow by doubling off the wall in centerfield scoring Patterson from first and pushing the score out to 5-0.  

Julian Merryweather started on the mound for Mahoning Valley and set the tone early. He went 3 innings and allowed just 2 hits. He struck out 2 and did not walk a batter. David Speer (1-0) would follow with 4 innings of shutout relief. Speer allowed 5 hits and struck out 4. He did not walk a batter while earning his first professional win.Ramon Rodriguez worked a scoreless 8th inning. He did not allow a hit and walked 2. Luke Eubank would work the final inning. Eubank allowed 1 hit. He did not record a walk or a strikeout.

In the 1st inning, Patterson collected his 17th double of the season to move into a first place tie in the NYPL with Williamsport’s Derek Campbell.
