Mahoning Valley Scrappers lose to State College Spikes, 5-4

State College, PA-The Mahoning Valley Scrappers fell behind early in Wednesday night in State College in large part to some shaky defense. The Scrappers were able to bounce back and rally, getting the tying run on base in the 9th inning, but ultimately ended up falling 5-4 to the State College Spikes.

The Spikes would strike for a run in the 1st inning. With two outs,Nick Thompson would walk. He would then score on an RBI single from Alex De Leon for a 1-0 Spikes lead.     

State College would add two more runs in the bottom of the 3rdinning. Robelys Reyes struck out to start the inning but would reach on a passed ball on the strike out. Danny Diekroeger would follow with a single. Reyes would score on and RBI single from De Leon. Diekroeger would also score on an RBI single from Luis Cruz for a 3-0 Spikes lead.  

The Scrappers would get their first run on the board in the top of the 4th inning. Bradley Zimmer started the inning by reaching on a hit by pitch. With one out, Shane Rowland doubled to centerfield to score Zimmer from first.

State College would answer right back with a run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Ronnierd Garcia would start the inning by reaching on an error. He would advance to third on Jhohan Acevedo’s single. With one out, Garcia would score on Diekroeger’s RBI sac fly.

The Spikes last run of the game would come in the bottom of the 5th inning. De Leon started the inning by connecting on his 8th homerun of the season on the first pitch of the inning.

The Scrappers would pull to within two in the top of the 6th inning. Steven Patterson started the inning by walking. He then moved to third on a Zimmer single. Martin Cervenka would then single to score Patterson. With one out and Cervenka at third, Taylor Murphy would score Cervenka with a sac fly to centerfield.  

Mahoning Valley made it a one run game in the top of the 8th inning. Cervenka would single with one out. A wild pitch would move him to third. Leo Castillo would then pick up his 37th RBI of the season to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The Scrappers would get the tying run on base in the 9th inning when Yonathan Mendoza walked with one out. A pop out would end the game with him at first.

Sean Brady (2-4) started for the Scrappers. He went 5 innings and allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, on 10 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 2 while taking the loss. Jose Zapata would then pitch the final 3 innings. Zapata did not allow a run while surrendering 2 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 1.
