Niles, OH- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers have been better on the road this season, so starting a six game road trip looked promising. However, Hudson Valley’s Hunter Lockwood made sure that Duchess Stadium was a house of horrors on Wednesday night. Lockwood blasted two homeruns and drove in six as the Scrappers dropped their sixth straight game, 11-3.

Hudson Valley grabbed an early 2-0 lead after Braxton Leesingled and moved to third when Jace Conrad followed with a single. A passed ball on Francisco Mejia allowed Lee to score the first run of the game. Conrad would make it 2-0 on Lockwood’s RBI single.

The Scrappers were able to cut the deficit in half in the top of the 2nd inning. With one out, Taylor Murphy hit his first professional homerun on the first pitch he saw from Hudson Valley starter Oscar Armenta to make it a 2-1 game.

The Renegades would break the game open in the bottom of the 4th inning. They would plate five runs on five hits off of Scrappers starter Julian Merryweather. The big blow coming from Lockwood, a three run homerun.

After Hudson Valley added two more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, the Scrappers were able to make some noise at the plate. Bradley Zimmer and Mejia each singled to start the inning. Leo Castillo then doubled to rightfield to plate Zimmer. After Murphy was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Josh McAdams struck out,Yonathan Mendoza would walk with the bases load to bring home Mejia. Unfortunately it was as close as the Scrappers would get the rest of the game.

In the bottom half of the 8th inning, Lockwood would strike again. He blasted his second homerun of the game, a two run homerun to push the score to the final of 11-3. Lockwood finished the night 5 for 5 with 2 homeruns and 6 RBI.

Merryweather (0-1) started for the Scrappers and took the loss. He only lasted 3.2 innings. He allowed 7 runs, 6 earned, on 10 hits. Merryweather walked 2 and struck out 1.  Anthony Vizcaya relieved Merryweather and went 2.1 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits. He walked 2 and stuck out 2. David Speer pitched the final 2 innings. Speer allowed 2 runs on 2 hits. He walked 1 and struck out 2.

With the loss the Scrappers record drops to 8-18. They have lost 6 in a row.

The Scrappers and Renegades will continue their series on Thursday night in Hudson Valley at 7:05. If you can’t be at Eastwood Field or on the road, catch all the Scrappers games this season with Tim Pozsgai on Sports Radio 1240 AM.
