Niles, OH- On a pleasant night at Eastwood Field, the crowd of 3,587 was treated to a great night of pitching from both sides, ending in a 2-0 victory for Mahoning Valley.

With the Scrappers pitching staff entering the game third in the league in ERA, and Spikes staff entering second in the league, respectively, a pitcher’s duel was not surprising.  Both starters commanded the strike zone well, resulting in 16 strikeouts in the game.

Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Luis Lugo pitched very well for the second time in as many starts this year, throwing five scoreless innings surrendering only one hit and striking out five.  He threw 40 of his 56 pitches for strikes, a 71.4% rate.

In his two starts in 2013, Lugo has thrown 10 innings of scoreless baseball only allowing five hits and one walk, good for 0.60 WHIP.  The 19 year-old lefty has shown a great curveball, evident by four of his five strikeouts coming courtesy of batters looking at strike three.

“(Pitching coach) Scott (Erickson) has been with him all spring working with his curveball, and it looked good," managerTed Kubiak shared.  "It wasn’t the best it’s been, but it was good.”

Lugo also mentioned the work he has put in on the curveball.

“I’ve been working on the curveball making it sharp and not loopy and I think it worked well," Lugo said.

The Scrappers bullpen continued their run of dominance, throwing four scoreless innings.

Trevor Frank threw two innings, only allowing one hit.  Manuel Carmona entered the game in the eighth and pitched well.  He threw two perfect innings, and secured his second save of the year.

"[Carmona] looked very balanced over the rubber and was able to throw the way we know he can," Kubiak said.

The Spikes’ starting pitcher Nick Petree also threw very effectively.  Through his four innings, the righty out of Missouri State University allowed just one run on three hits and one walk while striking out four.  He threw 35 of his 48 pitches for strikes.

In relief of Petree, Victor DeLeon threw two scoreless innings, allowing just two while striking one.  Jeff Rauh closed the game out, surrendering one run on one hit.

The Scrappers’ offense once again struggled to push across runs.  For the seventh time in 11 games, the offense failed to score three or more runs.

The team’s first run came on a Manuel Boscan RBI single in the fourth, scoring Juan Herrera, who reached on a walk.  The second and last run of the night came on the first pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning on a solo home run by lead-off man Claudio Bautista, his second on the year.  Bautista is now hitting .350 on the year to go along with eight runs and 9 RBI’s.

No Mahoning Valley slugger had multiple hits, though Herrera and Robel Garcia each reached base twice.

The Scrappers move to 5-6 on the year after splitting the two-game series with State College.  Mahoning Valley will now travel to Williamsport to take on the Crosscutters in a three-game set.  The Spikes, who now sit at 6-4, will move on to Batavia to take on the Muckdogs.  The Scrappers-Crosscutters are set to start at 7:05 p.m. at Bowman Park.
