LANSING, MI - The Lansing Lugnuts (8-11) pounded out ten runs on eleven hits in the series finale on Thursday night, as they completed a four-game sweep of the Lake County Captains (5-15) with a 10-2 win. The Captains have dropped six straight games.

Lansing jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. The first two batters of the frame both walked, and completed a double steal to be in scoring position. Third baseman Mitch Nay singled home both runners before being thrown out going to second.

The Captains cut the lead in half in the second inning. The visitors loaded the bases on a single, walk, and a failed force attempt. Second baseman Claudio Bautista drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field.

The Lugnuts continued to make the lead bigger with a two-run second. A wild pitch scored a run form second along with a RBI double by first baseman Justin Atkinson made the lead 4-1 after two innings.

Captains’ starter Mitch Brown allowed four runs on six hits in four innings of work. He walked two and fanned six batters before making way for Matt Whitehouse.

The home team continued the two-run inning trend as they touched Whitehouse for two runs in the fifth. After getting the first two batters out, a batter reached on Captains’ shortstop Dorssys Paulino’s ninth error of the year. Lugnuts shortstop Dawel Lugo doubled the runner home after scoring on a RBI single by second baseman Jason Leblebijian.

Lansing took advantage of some wildness in the sixth to boost the lead to 7-1. Right fielder Ian Parmley walked, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Whitehouse wild pitch.

Kendall Graveman put in six solid innings for Lansing in response to his near no-hit bid last weekend. Graveman scattered three hits and one run while he walked two and retired seven via the strikeout. Phil Kish relieved Graveman for the seventh and sat the Captains down in order.

If the game wasn’t over already, Lansing added three more runs in the seventh to send Whitehouse to the showers. The Lugnuts loaded the bases with no outs before Leblebijian singled home one run and catcher Santiago Nessy plated two with a two-run single to left.

Captains manager Mark Budzinski made the walk to the mound to summon southpaw Wander Beras to extinguish the fire. Beras worked out of a bases loaded jam to keep the game at 10-1.

Whitehouse was charged with six runs (three earned) on five hits in two plus innings. Beras pitched the scoreless inning in relief.

Lake County capped the scoring at 10-2 with a lone run in the eighth. Center fielder Clint Frazier tripled to center field before touching the plate on a RBI single by Paulino.

Ben Heller threw a scoreless eighth inning for the Captains.

Kish surrendered one run in two innings. Griffin Murphy pitched a perfect ninth with three strikeouts.

The Captains will stay on the road and head to South Bend, IN on Friday to take on the South Bend Silver Hawks in game one of a three game series. The Captains will start LHP Luis Lugo (0-3, 9.58) and South Bend will counter with RHP Blake Perry (0-1, 7.24). First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 PM from Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium.
