Lake County surrendered a season-high 16 hits in Sunday's loss.

EASTLAKE, OH - Great Lakes batted around and scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and beat Lake County 9-6. In the seventh inning, the Loons used five hits, an error and a walk to plate four unearned runs. Great Lakes had a total of 16 hits in the ballgame, the most of any opponent against the Captains this season.

Great Lakes (24-26) scored in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Joey Curletta singled to lead off the inning. Two singles later Curletta scored. The RBI was given to Brandon Trinkwon and the Loons led 1-0.

Lake County (17-33) took the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Paul Hendrix tripled, and Eric Haase was hit-by-a pitch. Claudio Bautista singled to left field and Hendrix scored to tie the game at 1-1. Brian Ruiz hit into a fielder’s choice, which scored Haase. Ruiz scored on a single from Clint Frazier. Lake County led 3-1.

Great Lakes cut into the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Malcolm Holland led off with a single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Hoenecke. The score was 3-2 Lake County after five innings.

In the top of the sixth inning, Great Lakes took the lead. Trinkwon doubled and scored on a double by Jacob Scavuzzo the score was tied at 3-3. Spencer Navin gave the Loons the lead with a single and scored on a base hit by Jesmuel Valentin and the score was 5-3 Great Lakes.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Paul Hendrix singled for his third hit on the day, and trotted home on Eric Haase’s ninth homerun of the season. The score was tied at 5-5 headed to the seventh inning.

In the ninth inning, Brian Ruiz doubled and scored on a double from Ivan Castillo and the Captains cut the lead to 9-6.

RHP Mitch Brown (0-6) started for Lake County and did not get a decision. Brown pitched five innings and allowed just two earned runs. Brown allowed seven hits, one walk and he struck out four. Matt Whitehouse (1-1) took the loss. Whitehouse pitched one and two thirds innings and allowed seven runs, three runs were earned. Whitehouse allowed nine hits, and had one strikeout. Beras pitched one and one third scoreless innings. Kerry Doane pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

RHP Scott Barlow (1-0) started for Great Lakes and did not get a decision. Barlow pitched five innings, and allowed eight hits, five runs, four earned runs and two walks. He struck out four. Victor Araujo (1-0) earned the win. Araujo pitched two scoreless innings and did not allow a hit, he walked one and struck out one. Luis Chirinos pitched one inning and allowed three hits one earned runs and one strikeout. Mark Pope earned the save, his fifth of the season.

The Captains will remain home in Eastlake, OH on Monday to continue a six-game home stand. The Great Lakes Loons are in town for game two of a three-game set. The Captains will start RHP Robbie Aviles (1-1, 1.65) and the Loons will counter with RHP Victor Arano (2-2, 5.74). First Pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM from Classic Park.

Monday the Captains will observe Memorial Day with a special afternoon 1 PM game.
