Lake County rolls 6-0 over Burlington
April 28, 2012
EASTLAKE, OH- The Lake County Captains opened a three game series against the Burlington Bees on a cold, cloudy day at Classic Park. They showed the 1,668 fans in attendance a great pitching performance, as Will Roberts led the Captains to a 6-0 victory.
Lake County scored the game’s first run in the second inning, off of right hander Jose Macias (1-3, 6.65 ERA). Catcher Alex Lavisky singled to center to lead off. Second baseman Robel Garcia lined a double into the Captains’ bullpen, scoring Lavisky. Garcia was thrown out stretching a triple.
The Captains batted around in the third inning. Centerfielder Luigi Rodriguez singled to center field. Shortstop Francisco Lindor singled and stole second base. Designated hitter Alex Monsalve drove in his eleven and twelfth runs of the year with a single to center. He advanced to second on an error by the center fielder Aaron Shipman. First baseman Jerrud Sabourin scored Monsalve on a single. Third baseman Leonardo Castillo hit a double off the top of the left field wall to score Lavisky, who reached on a walk. Lake County led 5-0 after three innings.
Will Roberts (2-1, 2.90 ERA) started the game and he pitched seven shutout innings for the Captains. Roberts allowed four hits and did not walk a batter. He struck out three.
Roberts was happy with today's performance, “It was a nice, clean game. I kept the ball on the ground; I thought I felt really good, especially when I was warm. Everything was crisp and the offense was clicking.”
Cole Cook replaced Roberts after the seventh, and he finished the shutout for the Captains. He pitched two innings, only allowing one hit and one walk. He struck out three, including the final strikeout of catcher John Nestor.
Cook believed today was a fine-tuned performance, “I felt command of my body. Me and Lavisky were on the same page today. Our job is to keep the game the same and I was able to do that today.”
Righthander Drew Tyson came in and Lake County added a run in the bottom of the eighth. Rodriguez singled home left fielder Jordan Casas, who reached on a single. Casas advanced to second on defensive indifference.
Tyson allowed one run on two hits in his one inning of work.
Manager Dave Wallace was very pleased with the performance today. “It all started with Roberts, he kept the game moving...the offense bunched hits together; they have been improving with pitch selection lately. They are getting better over time.”
Minor league pitching coordinator and former Captains’ pitching coach Mickey Callaway was in attendance and was pleased with the pitching performance on the field.
“The guys were making pitches today, plain and simple. Will mixed his pitches well, he kept the ball on the ground and Cole Cook has been working well over the last few days and it showed in the game today.”
The Captains pounded out fourteen hits on the day, with Rodriguez and Sabourin leading the way with three apiece. Every batter had at least one hit in the game.
The Captains will send RHP Joe Colon (1-2, 4.26) to face RHP Raul Alcantara (0-3, 7.79) for the Bees. First pitch from Classic Park is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
