BOWLING GREEN- The Lake County Captains (11-17) opened a four game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods (16-13) and fell in the opener in a pitcher’s duel.

Lefthander Ryan Carpenter (4-1, 2.57 ERA) blanked the Captains over six innings, only allowing three hits and one walk. He struck out three.

Centerfielder Bryson Myles singled with two outs in the first inning. He stole second, his seventh stolen base of the year. Catcher Alex Monsalve flew out to the right fielder to end the threat.

Righthander Cody Anderson (2-1, 2.42 ERA) did not allow a baserunner until the third inning. The Hot Rods led off with a walk by leftfielder Josh Sale.  Centerfielder Joel Caminero grounded out to first for the second out, but moved Sale into scoring position. Second baseman Ryan Brett drove in Sale for his ninth RBI for the year.

The Captains had another opportunity to tie the ballgame in the fifth inning. First baseman Leonardo Castillo singled with one out in the inning. Third baseman Todd Hankins lined into a force out at second base. Hankins stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Shortstop Nick Bartolone grounded out or the third out.

Reliever Rob Nixon replaced Anderson in the seventh inning. Anderson pitched another gem, going six innings, allowing one run on one hit. He walked one and struck out a batter.

Third baseman Taylor Motter singled with two outs in the seventh. He stole second and scored on a single by designated hitter Cameron Seitzer. Giving the Hot Rods a 2-0 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Reliever Rob Nixon pitched two innings, allowing one run on three hits. He walked one, struck out one and hit a batter.

The Hot Rods’ bullpen shut the Captains down after Carpenter. Jason McEachern gave up one hit in two innings with one walk and one strikeout. He picked up his third hold. Charlie Cononie pitched a perfect ninth inning to save his second game of the year.

Myles led the Captains with two hits, Jordan Casas and Castillo counted for the other two hits. The Captains went 0-5 with runners in scoring position.

The second game is set for 3:05 on Sunday afternoon from Bowling Green, Kentucky. No pitching matchup has been announced.
