SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Lake County Captains (5-17) lost their eighth straight game as they fell 6-4 to the South Bend Silver Hawks (14-8) Saturday.

Lake County right-hander Dace Kime (0-4, 9.95 ERA) received the start against South Bend righty Ben Eckels (1-2, 6.75 ERA).

Each starter tossed a trio of scoreless innings before the Silver Hawks scored twice in the fourth inning. Left fielder Chuck Taylorand right fielder Stryker Trahan led off with a pair of back-to-back singles before a one-out single by third baseman Joe Munoz brought home Taylor. A throw to the plate allowed runners to advance to second and third on an error by catcher Richard Stock. The misplay proved costly as a groundball to third allowed Trahan to score, giving the Silver Hawks the 2-0 lead.

The Captains countered immediately in their share of the fifth inning. Shortstop Dorssys Paulino singled before he was caught attempting to swipe second. Third baseman Grant Fink filled the void with another single before a wild pitch pushed him to second. A pair of consecutive singles by first baseman Nellie Rodriguez and designated hitterAnthony Santander scored Fink to cut the Silver Hawks’ lead in half.

Eckels was pulled and replaced with reliever Blayne Weller, who secured the final two outs of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.

Two more touched home in South Bend’s share of the inning. With two out, shortstop Andrew Velazquez singled and stole second and Taylor drew a walk. Trahan sent a ground rule double down the left field line to score one, ending the evening for Kime. Kime’s final line sealed at 4.2 innings pitched as he allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits, a pair of walks and five strikeouts.

Kime was replaced by reliever Kenny Mathews, who yielded one run on a single to right field. Right fielder Josh McAdams recorded the final out of the inning as he struck down Trahan during a play at the plate.

Lake County scored another off of reliever Austin Platt in the sixth inning. Centerfielder Clint Frazier hit a two-out single and snagged second for his first steal of the season. Paulino followed with a walk before Fink’s second single of the day scored Frazier, cutting South Bend’s lead to 4-2.

The back-and-forth play continued into the bottom of the sixth inning with one out. First baseman George Robertssingled before a throwing error by Paulino allowed centerfield Breland Almadova to reach first. That completed Mathews’ outing as he was replaced with Alexis Paredes. Catcher B.J. Lopez greeted Paredes with a single that scored Roberts, boosting South Bend to the 5-2 advantage.

The Captains couldn’t quit in the seventh inning as they took advantage of Platt’s erratic outing. Santander drew a walk and took second on a wild pitch before second baseman Paul Hendrix was plunked with a pitch. Stock grounded out to push the runners into scoring position and McAdams sent a sacrifice fly center to score Santander. Another wild pitch allowed Hendrix to score before left fielder Brian Ruiz sent Platt packing with a single to right, advancing the score to 5-4.

That was all the runs Captains could craft, and the Silver Hawks tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on an interference play. Despite a one-out walk in the top of the ninth, the Captains couldn’t capitalize.
