Lake County Captains lose two-run lead, fall to Great Lakes, 6-5

(Midland, MI)- Paul Hoenecke blasted a solo homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Great Lakes Loons past the Lake County Captains by a final of 6-5. Hoenecke now has six homeruns on the season and the Loons have taken three of four from the Captains this season after the 6-5 win.

Claudio Bautista smacked a two run homer over the left field wall in the top of the first inning and the Captains led 1-0. Great Lakes did not waste any time to answer back. The Loons scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Great Lakes used three hits, and an error to score a total of four runs in the inning, only three were unearned. The big hit in the inning was a triple from Josmar Cordero. The Loons led 4-2 after one inning.

In the second inning, The Captains got a run back. Two singles and an error put runners at the corners for Lake County. Greg Harris, the Loons Starter Balked, and the Captains trimmed the lead to 4-3.

Great Lakes (27-29) scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead. Josmar Cordero reached on an error to lead off. Cordero went to second on a passed ball and was sacrificed to third base. Cordero scored on a double by Spencer Navin and the score was 5-3 Loons after four innings. 

Lake County (19-37) came right back in the fifth and cut into the lead. Richard Stock, who had two hits, doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. The score was 5-4 Loons after five innings. The Captains tied the game in the top of the seventh inning, Stock began the rally again, this time with a single. Stock was bunted to second and eventually moved to third base. Stock scored on an error and the ballgame was tied at 5-5.

RHP Robbie Aviles (1-1) started for Lake County and did not get a decision. Aviles pitched six and one third innings. Robbie allowed seven hits, five runs, only one run was earned. Aviles did not walk a batter and he fanned four. Aviles hit one batter on the night. Ben Heller (3-1) entered in relief. Heller took the loss after pitching one and two thirds innings, he allowed one earned run on one hit. Heller walked one and fanned three.

RHP Greg Harris (4-4) started for Great Lakes and lasted four and one third inning without a decision. Harris allowed six hits and four earned runs and he struck out nine. Harris allowed the homer to Bautista. Great Lakes used three relievers. Victor Arano (3-2) earned the win after pitching two innings and allowing two hits and one earned runs. Arano walked one and struck out one. The save went to Jacob Rhame his third of the season after he pitched a scoreless ninth inning.

The Captains will remain in Midland, Michigan on Sunday to continue a three game series with the Great Lakes Loons starting on Sunday Afternoon. The middle game of the series will feature RHP Dace Kime (0-7, 6.70) starting for the Captains and RHP Jordan Hershiser (0-0, 0.00) getting the nod for the Loons. First Pitch is scheduled for 3:05 PM from Dow Diamond.
