LANSING, Mich. – The Lansing Lugnuts (5-11) used a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to take the series opener against the Lake County Captains (5-12) Monday night by a final score of 7-6. The Captains have dropped three straight games.

Lake County jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when catcherEric Haase homered to left field, his fourth of the young season.

Lansing tied the game back in the bottom half of the inning. Left fielder Dickie Joe Thon doubled to center field and moved to third on a groundout. Third baseman Mitch Nay doubled home Thon to tie the game.

The big question area this season has been the defensive mishaps and one came back to bite the Captains in the second. First baseman Nellie Rodriguez made his first error of the year, allowing right fielder Carlos Ramirez to reach. Ramirez stole second base and scored on a RBI double by second baseman Jason Leblebijian. The Captains made two errors in the game.

Designated hitter Anthony Santander broke a 0 for 36 streak in the third inning when he laced a two-out RBI triple to plate Haase, who reached on an error. The game was tied 2-2.

A three-run third inning gave Lansing some short-lived breathing room. Runs were plated by a groundout and two RBI singles.

Lansing starter Alberto Tirado exited the game after three innings of work. He allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits. He walked three and fanned two before giving way to Jairo Labourt.

The Captains gained some momentum in the fourth. Right fielder Josh McAdams led off with a single before center fielder Clint Frazier walked two batters later. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. ShortstopDorssys Paulino tripled home both runners to cut the deficit to one. Haase walked to end Labourt’s night. Roberto Espinosa entered before a throwing error plated both runners to give Lake County the lead again at 6-5.

Labourt was charged with four runs (two earned) in one third of an inning.

Dace Kime continued his disappointing season with a struggling effort on Monday night. He allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits in four innings. Five of the nine hits were extra-base hits. Kenny Mathews relieved Kime to open the fifth inning.

Nay greeted Mathews with a single and Nay scored on a double by catcher Santiago Nessy. The game was tied at six.

The Lugnuts won the game with a run in the seventh inning. First baseman Matt Dean tripled to the left field gap to open the frame. Nay plated Dean with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Following Labourt, the Lugnuts bullpen combined to shut out the Captains over five and two-thirds innings of work.Griffin Murphy picked up the win and Scott Silverstein earned the save.

Mathews took the loss, after he allowed two runs in three innings of work. Ben Heller threw a scoreless eighth inning.

The Lugnuts outhit the Captains 12-10 in the game. Second baseman Claudio Bautista led the Captains with three hits while third baseman Grant Fink had two hits. Lake County left twelve men on base.

The Captains and the Lugnuts are scheduled to continue the four game series Tuesday. RHP Caleb Hamrick (1-1, 8.25 ERA) is set take the mound for Lake County against RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (0-2, 5.17 ERA) for the Lugnuts. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
