Lake County Captains lose 12-4 to Lansing after giving up 6 in the 7th
EASTLAKE, Ohio – The Lake County Captains (9-9) were defeated by the Lansing Lugnuts (10-8) Tuesday evening by the final score of 12-4. The loss was the Captains' fifth straight and put the team four games out of first place in the Midwest League Eastern Division.
The Captains managed to score first in the bottom of the second inning off of Lugnut starter Brad Allen. Left fielder Torsten Bossled off the frame with a solo home run to right. The home run was Boss' third of the season.
Lake County starter Mitch Brown (2-7, 4.16 ERA) shut down Lansing's hitters through four innings. However, he was unable to keep the Lugnuts off the scoreboard starting in the fifth inning. Right fielder Derrick Loveless led off the inning with a double. Brown then threw his 16th wild pitch of the season which allowed Loveless to advance to third. Shortstop Dawel Lugo then took advantage by driving in Loveless with a single to center. Mike Reeves and David Harris then followed Lugo with consecutive singles to give the Lugnuts a 2-1 lead.
Lansing continued to add to its lead in the top of the sixth inning. With one out in the inning, Matt Dean doubled to right. Third baseman Mitch Nay then followed Dean with a single to put runners on second and third. Brown then threw another wild pitch that allowed Dean to score from third. The Lugnuts added another run later in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Lugo. The sacrifice fly gave Lansing a 4-1 lead.
The Lugnuts put the game officially put the game out of reach with a big top of the seventh inning. Reeves, Harris, and Chaz Frank all reached base off of Brown to start the inning. After scoring a run on a fielder's choice, Dean knocked Brown out of the game with a backbreaking grand slam to right. After Brown was replaced by Wander Beras, Loveless added another run with a solo home run. The home run gave the Lugnuts a 10-1 lead.
In total, Brown pitched 6.1 innings, gave up ten hits, nine runs, eight earned runs, walked two, and struck out four.
The Captains attempted to comeback in the bottom of the eighth inning. Center fielder Clint Frazier singled to start the frame. Eric Haase then hit a two-run home run to cut Lansing's lead. Lake County added another run on a RBI single by Dorssys Paulino to cut the deficit to 10-4.
However, Lansing responded with two runs in the top of the ninth inning. After D.J. Davis and Dean reached base to start the inning, Lugo drove both of them in with a double to right to increase the Lugnuts' lead to 12-4.
Relief pitcher Jimmy Cordero (2-1, 2.16 ERA) got the win after pitching a scoreless fifth inning. Brown took the loss.
The Captains will look to get back on track Wednesday afternoon when they continue their series with the Lugnuts. Lake County is scheduled to start Caleb Hamrick (2-4, 6.63 ERA) while Lansing is scheduled to pitch Jeremy Gabryszwski (6-2, 3.82 ERA).
