INDIANAPOLIS - The Columbus Clippers beat the Indianapolis Indians in game one of their series 5-1 on Tuesday night. The Clippers offense was lead by catcher Matt Pagnozzi who went 2-for-2 in the game, including a double, home run, two RBI, two runs, and a walk.
It was Corey Kluber’s turn in the rotation to pitch for Columbus, and he finished the game going six innings allowing one run and fanned seven batters. He was also able to pick up the win giving him a perfect 3-0 record in three starts this season.
The Clippers were able to put the first two runs of the game up on the board in the top half of the second inning. Left fielder Ryan Spilborghs hit a ground ball single to Indians right fielder Brandon Boggs, allowing Clippers right fielder Chad Huffman to score. Later in the inning Pagnozzi hit a sacrifice fly to center field to that scored designated hitter Russ Canzler to make the score 2-0.
Columbus continued to put runs on the board in the third inning when, with the bases loaded, Canzler reached base on a throwing error by Indians third basemen Matt Hague which allowed Clippers first basemen Matt LaPorta to score.
The Indians started to show some life in the bottom half of the fifth after center fielder Gorkys Hernandez hit an RBI single on a line drive to center fielder Trevor Crowe. Boggs was able to easily score on the play, but that was the only run the Indians would be able to produce in the game.
Pagnozzi got the run back for the Clippers in the sixth inning with a solo homer to make it 4-1, and then in the ninth inning the Clippers pushed their fifth and final run across on second basemen Cord Phelps' sixth double of the season which scored Pagnozzi.
