As first reported in a tweet on Thursday by the IBI's Tony Lastoria, the Indians are prepared to call up infielder Jose Ramirez from Triple-A Columbus.

Ramirez, 21, is hitting .319 with 4 HR, 17 RBI and .849 OPS in 23 games for Columbus, and has also chipped in with eight stolen bases and a nice 9-8 walk to strikeout ratio. Columbus played on Thursday but he did not play because he had already received word of his callup and was en route to Cleveland.

It remains to be seen whose spot on the 25-man roster he takes. Second baseman Jason Kipnis suffered an abdominal strain in the game on Tuesday and did not play on Wednesday. The Indians planned to wait until Friday to make a decision on whether it will be a disabled list situation for him, but they apparently are already prepared to do that. If it is not Kipnis who goes to the disabled list for Ramirez, then it would almost have to be Elliot Johnson who is replaced.

Ramirez has primarily played second base this season, the one position he projects as a Major League starter. The Indians have had him play a little shortstop and even some outfield for the first time to add to his versatility. Terry Francona may opt to start Mike Aviles at second base if Kipnis goes on the disabled list and then slide Ramirez into Aviles' utility role, but this may be a great opportunity to give Ramirez an everyday opportunity at second base to potentially prove a spark to the team both offensively and defensively.

If Bauer starts on Saturday for the Clippers than it would be Tomlin that gets the call for Tuesday in Cleveland.

Francona clearly has Johnson in the lineup for his stellar defense. He drops the ball very well.

If there is one weakness with Francona, he sticks with underperforming veterans for too long and isn't willing to make adjustments very quickly. Heck, the 2-3-4 of Swisher, Kipnis, and Santana were being trotted out there in the same spots every night even when they were probably the worst 2-3-4 combination in baseball offensively (and probably close to the bottom defensively too). No adjustments, no changes to the personnel or lineup, etc. The Indians can't afford these long ruts and dry spells if they want to get back to the postseason; they were fortunate last year because of that late 10 game winning streak, but that can't be expected to happen again at the end of this season, even if the teams were similarly weak (and I don't think they are, though I don't recall the exact schedule off the top of my head).

Ramirez arrived in Cleveland on Thursday. Also he is a switch hitter so should be in there regardless of the pitcher.

Makes little sense. Danks is also a guy with a career reverse split, so if they really didn't want to throw Ramirez in, having Chisenhall at 3rd and Aviles at 2b wouldn't be a horrible idea.

Maybe Ramirez is tired out from the trip to Cleveland and needs to rest up tonight????

You guys all wanted Ramirez to be called up to become a utilty infielder like Aviles. You got your wish so why cry now?

@Shy

The lineups have been released....so unless Francona was playing a cruel joke on is, yes Johnson is starting at 2B again, just like he did in LA the last game.

Whoa, RU sure Johnson starts at second? This is a guy last time I looked had 12 AB's all season and got pine splinters in his butt sitting there watching Cory Kluber pinch run. Now, after calling up Mr. Sparky, they're going to run Johnson out there and let J Ram sit? If this is the case, Francona needs a check up from the neck up. Seriously, they have these tests now for dementia.

What the hell is the point of bringing Ramirez up if he is sitting. You are right Tony. Some of these decisions are really head scratchers. Like to know whose decisions they are.

Unfreakingbelievable. Elliot Johnson starts at second base and Ramirez is sitting. Really concerned about some of the decision making this season.

Article by Jaffe on si.com outlines the Indians problems all over. Also indicates they are home for next 10 games against division teams, and suggesting they have to turn things around pretty quick. With Kipnis now disabled, this will be tougher. There are 4 teams above them, and now would be a great time to put a decent streak together.

Well Aviles is not starting over Ramirez (he's playing 3B).....Elliot Johnson is the starting 2B tonight....

No word if Ramirez is in the starting lineup, but shame on the Indians if he is not. He should get the vast majority of playing time at second base while Kipnis is away. Keep Aviles in his utility role. Let JRam play at his best position and show what he can do. So help me, if they sit Ramirez and play Aviles more often.....

It's official...Kipnis goes on the 15-day DL...Ramirez called up...Is he in the starting lineup tonight?

@Tony.. yeah, something had to be up with him.. he's not thrown at all up until now.. no word.. no info..Being placed on the 40 man usually portends a level of confidence by the Indians FO / player development area that they are expecting good things.. With Price..it's been nada..not a word either...

Where is it written that JRam is going to be promoted to sit and watch?... I don't see it.. anywhere..

Ring !!! Aunt Sally here....

Price has a shoulder injury. Indians have been quiet as to the seriousness of it. He might be a 60-day DL candidate.

The ab and oblique strains take time and rest to heal and I think Kip needs to get the rest and then incorporate some more core stuff into his everyday training to prevent it from happening again, He looks like he has gained a few pounds, they may want to look at that as well and try to keep it in a healthy range. So yes, I think he goes DL and Ramirez will be starting most games until he comes back, which could be the spark we're craving. I remember the Dodgers mired in last place last year when they called up Yasiel Puig and they went 42/8 the last 50 games. It will be interesting to see who comes up next- Bauer or Tomlin or Perez. Any word on Yan's wife's due date?

@GSon

I can't see Price in danger of losing his roster spot though guess crazier things have happened. Barnes would be more likely IMO as he's down to his last option where as Price is using only his first. Johnson makes a lot of sense too though as does Sellers.

I wasn't suggesting they call up Ramirez to sit on the bench. I was suggesting they called up Ramirez to start for a couple games while Kip sits and attempts to avoid a DL stint.

Again, doesn't "have" to be Kip to the DL at all. If the Tribe is optimistic that Kip only would be out 5-7 days total then sending down Lee and bringing up Ramirez makes more sense than DLing Kipnis.

Kip to the DL is probably the resulting move as injuries like his don't ever seem to heal quickly.

@Canadian Joe & Walter. June 1st isn't the panic button pushing time..July 1st, perhaps closer.. The two plus weeks following the All Star Break leading up to the trading deadline will be the "fish or cut bait" time. That's about 50 to 60 games from now.. A lot can happen between now and then...

Congrats to J-Ram..good prospect..playing 2B.. will be needed. Yan will be going on the Paternity thing, so another move may be needed.. Hermies suggestion that Lee be sent down and Roberto Perez (hopefully NOT Kottaras) could cover Yan's paternity leave. Sell-Block, Pryce or Elliot Johnson's spot on the forty man roster may be in danger..

Bringing J-Ram up and playing him at second may permit the Indians to showcase him for a team like the Blue Jays. The Jays have a desperate need for a prospect just like J-Ram and have some interesting prospects of their own that might interest the Indians.. Guys that I like with the Jays could include Anthony Gose and Clint Hollon.. It's a thought..

Another potential could be Big G calling it what it is..I know it's only eight at bats..but, tbh.. he's embarrassing himself. He may want to be big about the decision..and work with the kids.. including young Mr Aguilar.. we shall see..

I hope they wouldn't pull up someone this hot on a team playing this bad to stick him on the bench as a utility player. If Kip lands on the DL, he should absolutely be the starting 2nd basemen. This team needs a spark something fierce and Jose contributes everything but power (even though he's got more HR than any tribe player right meow). This infield defense is pitiful, it would be nice to have one decent player out there.

Canadian Joe good observations. I believe by June 1st we will know what kind of direction the Indians will go. I hope they are not out of contention at that time.

Agree Tony. I just hope they play Ramirez every day, and let him really get his feet wet. To let him play every day for 8-10 games gives them a pretty good window to see where he is. And also at 2nd base. No where else. This team is getting pretty close to win or else. They are struggling in every area. Bauer, Tomlin, Aguilar and even Lindor now have to be in discussions. If things don't turn in the next few weeks, it's time to move on.

Pretty certain that with Ramirez coming up that Kipnis is going to the DL. Otherwise, if Kipnis is going to play in a few days, their history does not suggest they would call up a prospect like Ramirez to sit the bench since Kipnis would still start and Aviles is still the main utility guy. Has to be Kipnis to the DL.

I still say an option could be top send Lee back down and go with 14 position players and 11 pitchers. Gives you a few more days to make the decision on Kipnis; til Tuesday when you need a 5th starter.

Still would have 7 pen arms and as said before, Francona went with 14 position players for a few days last year when Santana was banged up...

Course Kipnis could be so hurt that the DL is the only option...
