Jorge Martinez powers Mahoning Valley Scrappers to 10-inning win
Jamestown, NY- When your offense has been struggling to score runs, you are always looking for someone to step up and be a spark to get the fire started. On Monday afternoon it was Jorge Martinezwho provided that spark. Martinez hit a solo homerun in the 8thinning to tie the game at 1. Then in the top of the 10th inning he delivered is second homerun to give the Mahoning Valley Scrappers the lead and what would be the final score at 2-1 of the Jamestown Jammers. With the win, the Scrappers split the opening series 2 games apiece.
Luis DeJesus started in what would be another pitcher’s duel. DeJesus was dominant from the start. He went 5 innings allowing just 3 hits and no runs. He walked only 1 while striking out 3.
DeJesus then turned the ball over to Jordan Carter. The Indians 22nd round draft pick from St. Joseph pitched a solid 2 innings. He allowed 2 hits and 1 run that was earned. Carter walked 1 and struck out 1.
Following Carter into the ballgame was J.P. Feyereisen. Feyereisen, the Indians 16th round draft pick out of UW-Steven’s Point worked a near perfect 2 innings of relief to pick of the win. He did walk a batter and hit a batter while striking out 2.
Following Martinez’s second homer of the game in the top of the 10th inning, the Scrappers turned the ball over to Jimmy Stokes. Stokes came out of the bullpen and worked a perfect, 1-2-3 10th inning to record his 2nd save of the season. Stokes struck out all 3 batters that he faced.
The Scrappers now return home for the home opener at Eastwood Field on Tuesday night when the Auburn Doubledays come to town.
