Niles, OH – Another night of baseball, another night of sloppy play by the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, resulting in a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Jamestown Jammers.  Mahoning Valley has now lost six in row, due in part to poor defensive play.  The defense had two errors on the night, which led to two unearned runs, and Jamestown runners swiped five bags off of starting pitcher Luis Gomez.  The Scrappers also issued six free passes on the night.

Luis Gomez, making his first start with the Scrappers following a callup from the Arizona Indians of the Arizona Rookie League, labored through 4 2/3 innings.  Though two of his three runs were unearned, Gomez didn’t help himself by allowing Jammers runners to run wild.  Jamestown stole one base in each inning in which Gomez appeared, and two of those runs later scored on errors by the Mahoning Valley defense.  Gomez also struggled with the strike zone, walking four batters and working deep into counts in countless others.  In relief for the Scrappers, Michael Goodnight pitched out of two jams, finishing the night throwing 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and two walks to go along with two strikeouts.  Ben Heller threw a perfect eighth inning, while Harold Guerrero kept the collective hopes alive of the Scrappers by hurling a perfect ninth.

The Scrappers offense once again failed to get any momentum going despite many opportunities.  The only offense of the night came courtesy of a towering, solo home run by Robel Garcia in the bottom of the fourth.  The home run was Garcia’s fifth of the year, and the RBI was his 20th, respectively.  Mahoning Valley had a runner on base in every inning except for one, but stranded six runners and struck out 13 times.  Garcia finished the night going 1-4 with the home run.  Paul Hendrix added two singles, while Claudio Bautista and Sicnarf Loopstok each tacked on a hit.  Every batter struck out at least once except Josh McAdams

The Jamestown offense also missed opportunities to put the game out of reach but did just enough to get the win. Adam Landecker led the way with two hits and an RBI.  Harold Ramirez also recorded an RBI.  The success of the Jammers offense wasn’t predicated on hits however, but their success on the basepaths.  Landecker and leadoff hitter Cardon Myles each swiped two bags, while Danny Collins and Adam Frazier each stole one.

Following the loss, Mahoning Valley falls to 23-36 on the year, 13.5 games out of first place.  Jamestown improves to 37-23, winning their fourth straight game.  Even with the win streak, the Jammers can’t get any separation for the State College Spikes, who have won six in a row.  The teams remain deadlocked atop the Pinckney Division.  The teams will meet Thursday in the third and final game of the series.  For the Jammers, right-hander Isaac Sanchez will take hill.  The 21-year-old out of Bronx, NY will be making his 12th start of the season.  On the year, Sanchez sports a 3.83 ERA to go along with a 1.34 WHIP.  He has struck out 42 batters in 47 innings.  The starter for the Scrappers has yet to be determined.  First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Eastwood Field.
