On Monday the Cleveland Indians announced that they signed free agent infielder/outfielder Nate Spears to a minor league contract with a non-roster invitation to 2013 Major League spring training camp.
Spears, 27, spent most of the 2012 season with the Pawtucket Red Sox where he hit .240 with 16 doubles, 4 triples, 10 homers and 38 RBI in 108 games. His value to the Indians is as a depth option to fill a bench role at Triple-A Columbus as a jack-of-all-trades player because of his ability to play any infield position and both corner outfield spots.
The Indians also announced that right-handed pitcher Fabio Martinez cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors. He had been designated for assignment on November 20th.
