Indians sign Arias and two others to minor league contracts
The Indians have signed right-handed pitcher Gabriel Arias, right-handed pitcher Rainer Florez and right-handed pitcher Jose Nina to minor league contracts. There is no word if they were given invites to major league spring training, but the unofficial word is they have not been extended those invites and are simply players being brought strictly to minor league camp to contend for a spot at Triple-A Columbus or Double-A Akron.
Arias, 24, pitched for the Phillies' High-A Clearwater team last season and in 12 appearances went 6-2 with a 2.47 ERA. In 54.2 innings he allowed 50 hits, 2 homers, 14 walks and had 39 strikeouts. Over seven seasons with the Phillies he has compiled a 25-21 record and 2.52 ERA in 125 total appearances with a 1.9 BB/9 and 8.2 K/9. He has never pitched above High-A.
Florez and Nina are unknowns and are not listed in any MLB or MiLB database, so both may be recent Latin American signings as first time professionals.
