The Indians have been reported as interested in free agent first baseman David Cooper and free agent right-handed pitcher Jason Hammel.

According to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, he says the Indians have expressed interest in Hammel and have talked to his representatives. ESPN's Buster Olney later reported that the Indians have moved on as Hammel's price tag at the moment is too high for the Indians liking. The 30-year old Hammel went 7-8 with a 4.97 ERA in 26 appearances for the Orioles last season (139.1 IP, 155 H, 22 HR, 48 BB, 96 K).

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick has reported the Indians are close to resigning Cooper to a major league deal. He had been signed in August to a minor league deal that included a clause where he had to be added to the major league roster by September 1st or he could request his release. Even though it would be a major league deal, it would probably only be a one year deal for something between the major league minimum ($500K) and $1 million.

Should not be an issue with Aguilar and Cooper. Would expect Aguilar to get primary time at 1B and Cooper to get primary time at DH. But both also mix in at 1B and DH. Probably a 70-30 or 60-40 split between 1B/DH.

Indians have six years of control of Cooper.

Would Cooper be a free agent after the year or would he still be controlled by the Indians as he has less than 6 years service time?

He has an option remaining and is all but certain to open in Columbus as depth unless Giambi or Swisher are hurt.

With Cooper signing a major league contract does that means he could start the year in Columbus? If yes how many options do he have?

Update: The Cooper signing is now official. He is signed to a major league deal by the Indians.
