Today the Indians announced that they have designated outfielder Thomas Neal for assignment and have placed outfielder Grady Sizemore on the 60-day disabled list. The moves were necessary as they had to clear two spots on the 40-man roster for right-handed reliever Dan Wheeler and infielder Jose Lopez by today's 5:00 PM EST roster deadline. Wheeler and Lopez were signed to minor league contracts this winter and were in camp this spring as non-rostered players, so had to be added to the 40-man roster.
The Indians now have ten days to trade, release or outright Neal to the minors. If he goes unclaimed he would be outrighted to Triple-A Columbus and would still be under the Indians' control for the 2012 season. Sizemore is now officially unavialable to the Indians until at least June 3rd as that is the earliest he can be removed from the 60-day disabled list.

Was there any other trigger for the Grady move to the 60 day DL now instead of earlier in the spring? Any setbacks in his recovery??
