IBI Chat 1.01 - 12/6 Chat transcript

IBI Chat 1.01 - 12/6 Chat transcript
December 6, 2013
Share via: Share: Facebook Share: Twitter Share: Google Share: Pinterest Share: Print Share: Email

The Indians have been very quiet this offseason. They had reported interest in Tim Hudson and signed David Murphy, but outside of those two players, it has been strangely quiet in the offices at the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.  The Winter Meetings were the jumpoff point for the Indians last offseason, so maybe the same holds true this offseason.

With the Winter Meetings just hours away I felt today would be a good time to debut our first IBI Chat. We have done these for a few games in the past, but I feel going forward having a weekly chat session at a designated time makes the most sense.

This was but a test run with not much of an advanced warning, but overall I thought it went well. I will probably do another one next Friday at noon as it would seem to be a good time to regroup and discuss things with the conclusion of the Winter Meetings and hopefully some increased Indians activity.

After any chat I will be posting transcripts from them on the front page. Here is the transcript from today's piece.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions with the chat feature you would like to see added or improved, please let me know. I am always receptive to finding ways to make things look and work better.

Chat Open

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 10:06 AM

Hey everyone....testing out a site chat today and felt like now would be the best time to do so with the Winter Meetings just two days away. I don't anticipate a lot of traffic given the short notice and this being the first go around with this....but this should be a lot of fun.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 10:06 AM

I will be back just before noon.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 10:15 AM

Good

hiramb December, 6, 2013 11:10 AM

Interested to see what the Yankees do after this. They have a ton of holes

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 11:26 AM

I don't think they are sitting around wringing their hands. I believe they have an offer out for Omar Infante, plus they've added infield depth with Brendan Ryan and Kelly Johnson signings. I think we will see the Yanks up their offer for Infante and move on if he doesn't take it.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 11:36 AM

Yeah, I heard that they spoke with Cincy about Phillips too in case this happens. I think they'll make more moves but I think them not having a farm system is going to ultimately be their down fall because with the age of that team and with the long season going to be tough to stay injury free

hiramb December, 6, 2013 11:37 AM

They also need pitching at least another SP and bullpen help with a closer. I think this is a very poorly run franchise and they refuse to bite the bullet of a quick rebuild to replenish the players they have. Boston is much better run and it shows

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 11:54 AM

Feldman to the Astros 3/30 and Granderson 4/60 to the Mets. Wild morning so far.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 11:54 AM

WOW

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 11:54 AM

Cano deal just shows the power of a big TV contract. Even with poor attendance, when you are getting $100M a year LOCALLY and then the national TV money on top of it.....it is hard to compete.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 11:55 AM

Still a buyer's market, IMO

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 11:55 AM

It looks like the Indians are going to miss out on all the free agents. Can't compete with these prices

Trent December, 6, 2013 11:56 AM

Does the cano deal have any effect on a kipnis extension?

Madthinker88 December, 6, 2013 11:56 AM

greetings crew... Its dam cold outside. Wind chill is -18. I need this hot stove to warm me up. Could ACab be on his way to the Pnstrips in light of Cano departing???

GoTribe028 December, 6, 2013 11:56 AM

I wouldn't say they're "missing" on most of these FA's. These prices are flat out rediculous

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 11:56 AM

I will not be surprised if the Indians miss out on any names in FA. It is an inefficient market. Way over-priced. Remember, they only got Swisher and Bourn last year because their markets were seriously repressed. I expected small deals in FA this year and potentially more meat from trades.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 11:57 AM

You think the Yanks would experiment with Cabby at second? They just signed Kelly Johnson who can also play second

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 11:57 AM

I'm thinking Bourn's deal looks a bit more palatable. I hope the Tribe shops him...

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 11:57 AM

I'm somewhat okay with sitting back and doing nothing with the price of a lot of these FAs.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 11:57 AM

I think they'll sign a couple ppl. It's known they wer in the hunt for other guys like Mujica and Wilson

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 11:58 AM

I don't think Cano has much of an effect on a Kipnis extension. Kind of its own entity. It will be to buy out his arbitration years.....much different.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 11:58 AM

If they're going to sign anyone, I bet Rodney gets a deal

Keenej December, 6, 2013 11:58 AM

I'm only concerned the Indians will mostly stand pat, a la 2007-08 offseason. We really need a starter to ensure a stable rotation. I don't care if we sign or trade for a player

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 11:58 AM

Johnson was signed as a UTL type for the Yanks, not to fill 2b.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 11:58 AM

Don't see Cabrera going to Yankees. They supposedly have interest in Infante.....and don't sleep on a Brandon Phillips trade there?

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 11:58 AM

Detroit has made a lot of moves... I'm hoping they won't be players for Choo. With the Royals, I hope Beltran goes else where.

Madthinker88 December, 6, 2013 11:59 AM

The market has been real quiet on Jesse Crain. Would want him to help the bullpen if it could be done.

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 11:59 AM

Supposedly Phillips isn't going anywhere (report out yesterday).

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 11:59 AM

if Choo ends up in Detroit, I'll be so sad

hiramb December, 6, 2013 11:59 AM

It would send the wrong message if the Indians do nothing and do a rob Peter to pay Paul type of deal. They knew it would take time to get it together because they've done nothing as an organization for so long but horard money and talk out of both sides of the mouth. It's put up or shut up time for these guys

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:00 PM

Jon Morosi believes the Ms next move will be a move for David Price.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:00 PM

I don't see the Indians standing pat....but I do think that when it is all said and done a lot of people will be underwhelmed with offseason considering what they gained and lost.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:00 PM

I'd be alright if they didn't sign any big bats still available, mostly because our lineup is crowded already. But we need pitching. So so so so so so bad

Keenej December, 6, 2013 12:00 PM

A few flyers on relievers (they grow on trees these days) and a solid starter and another flyer is what I'm looking for

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:01 PM

if that's the case they have no one to blame but themselves for what they get . I will be leading the charge for the Dolan's to sell and move on

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:01 PM

Indians have outfield depth and Bourn is a guy that makes a lot of sense to trade. Could use his money to fill other needs and also be more easily replaced internally.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:01 PM

I'd be alright with a Bourn trade, I could see Brantley move as well though

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:01 PM

Looks like anything the Tribe does will have to come through trades.

Nick December, 6, 2013 12:01 PM

Feldman 3/30 from Houston, wtf?

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:01 PM

You guys think we could make a move for jeff samardzija?

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

I think it's too early to say what the Indians will and will not do because NO ONE knows

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

id agree, Brantley could be an affordable option for teams looking for a CF / LF

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

I'm actually okay with things right now with the offense. I would PREFER a middle of order bat, but one just not available or within budget. Rather concentrate all resources on pitching and then sign an overlooked bat late in FA to one year deal.

Keenej December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

I could see a trade for Jeff

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

Trading guys out of an mediocre lineup to make it worse to say I got pitching IS NOT improving your team

Keenej December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

Assuming the price doesn't include Lindor and/or Frazier

Nick December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

I'd rather sit back, see who gets desperate and hope we can spring Drubs or Bourn on them. Some team will feel the itch.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:02 PM

As Jim Pete wrote the Indians have had good seasons and have failed to add players to get over the top before

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:03 PM

Keep Lindor and Frazier at all costs.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:03 PM

Feldman deal is crazy. The starting pitching options are very limited for the Indians. I am beginning to think they just wait to see if someone is left when dust settles. Or, more likely, they go the trade route which to me is a much better market to play in.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:04 PM

agreed Lindor and Frazier are not trade options. Everyone else is.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:04 PM

I am worried that this will be like the 2008 season, We have a great team in place, a few pieces away, and just wont add those pieces.

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:04 PM

I'm completely on board with going after Samardzija. Depending on what the Cubbies want, of course.

24455 December, 6, 2013 12:04 PM

which SP are available on the trade market?

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:04 PM

Hiram, no one knows what the Indians will do....but as I have been saying, and Hoynes said today, they are oiperating on a tight budget. Not a lot of room to add unless they make some subtractions. If those subtractions are smart I am fine with it

24455 December, 6, 2013 12:04 PM

besides Price and samardzija

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:05 PM

Brett Anderson as well

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:05 PM

Anderson would be a solid addition, assuming he can return to form

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:05 PM

There were rumors the Cards would trade Lance Lynn or Shelby Miller, but I can't see it happening now with Peralta on their roster.

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:05 PM

I just don't see Anderson ever being healthy enough to have a big impact on this team.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:06 PM

I would be fine with dealing Brantley IN THE RIGHT DEAL. He's being extremely over-rated by Tribe fans as a defender and hitter. He's a *solid* player and nice to have, but that .375 AVG with RISP is going to regress next year. Unsustainable. If it does, he's back to the player he was in 2011-2012.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:06 PM

I just wish the Indians would have brought back Kazmir. No way they could have offered what the A's did though

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:07 PM

Wouldn't you think that losing the contracts of Ubaldo, Kazmir, Smith, Perez, Reynolds, and Myers would free up at least 25-30 million dollars?

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:07 PM

No one knows Tony. Dolan and Antonetti are saying different things. I'm going to sit back and see what they do and if they do nothing like they've done before then they deserve to get what they will get. All in all, I'm totally dissatisfied with their ownership. They've done nothing with this franchise but try to recoup the money they decided to over spend for. They've done this for too long and it's time for them to move on and sell out. '11 Indians go .500 and the biggest move was Russ Canzler, '05 we get Jamey Caroll. It's time for the Dolans to sell out and move on

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:07 PM

you've also got to remember that cabby is owed 10 mil, and Bourn and Swish are in the second years of their contracts

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:07 PM

along with all the arbitration cases the Indians have to go through

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:07 PM

My biggest worry is this.. Can Kluber/McAllister/Salazar/Gomes/Brantley repeat their success in 2014? Probably not. A lot of overachivement.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:08 PM

80M payroll was average or below when they got the team and they are still trying to win with that. It's time for them to go if they do nothing

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:08 PM

The M's might be willing to move either James Paxton or Brandon Maurer for Brantley.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:08 PM

The Indians also had big increases to internal players. A lot of people are missing that. Even with Jimenez and others off payroll, for example, Bourn's salary went from $6M in 2013 to $13.5M in 2014. Swisher from $11M in 2013 to $15M in 2014. Most of the savings were wiped out.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:08 PM

who's going to replace Brantley if they make that move??

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:08 PM

Indians are already at $84M in payroll for next year, which is above last year.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:09 PM

Murphy would play left

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:09 PM

that's what he played in Texas

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:09 PM

Really? I did not know that

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:09 PM

who would play RF??

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:09 PM

It will be down again because they are going to trade Stubbs

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:09 PM

Raburn I would assume would be the main man, or find a replacement via free agency or trades

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:09 PM

Indians could make a smaller trade or free agent signing to replace Brantley. He's a good player, but is not unable to be replaced. League average player. There are a lot of those.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:10 PM

Best hitter on the team, IMO

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:10 PM

And by labeling Brantley a "league average player" that is not a knock on him. It is what he is. That's a good complementary player....but no star.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:10 PM

A lot of people will want Brantley based off of last year. Now's the time to trade him and cash in

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:10 PM

Raburn isn't a starter. I'm going to wait and see what they do

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:11 PM

Nelson Cruz is what the Indians need. No way they could pay for him though

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:11 PM

Hiram, the Indians operated with $50M payrolls under Jacobs. The only non 40-50M payroll for Jacobs was his final year as owner in 1999 when they were at $72 or somewhere around there. After he sold $60M in stock to finance the payroll increase.

Cmac9113 December, 6, 2013 12:11 PM

Who do you see the Indians targeting to solidify their bullpen? Not just closers, but we are losing 4 guys from the pen, so curious as to who we might go for.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:11 PM

I think they could find another OF like Franklin Gutierrez, Brennan Boesch, Tyler Colvin or Chris Coughlan on minor league deals with incentives, Brantley might net a better return than we'd think 3 yrs of control with positional flexibility.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:12 PM

Chris Coughlan would be sooooooooooooooo legit on a minor league deal

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:12 PM

It makes sense to deal him, but I may cry a little if he's traded. I love Brantley.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:12 PM

If the Indians could flip Brantley for a solid starting pitcher with some long term control, I feel more comfortable about being able to fill the LF void than SP void.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:13 PM

I agree

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:13 PM

that's robbing Peter to pay paul and not imprroving your team

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:13 PM

Unacceptable

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:13 PM

agree to disagree

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:13 PM

maybe Boston would have interest in Brantley to play CF. I'd start by asking for Felix Doubront and then maybe a pkg of...Brandon Workman and Matt Barnes.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:13 PM

Raburn is not a starter.....but is set to make up what looks like a good platoon situation in RF.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:13 PM

Disappointed on how comfortable ppl are willing to accept Mediocrity and excuses for the proposed lack of an offseason

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:14 PM

In 1995, the Indians had a $40 million payroll. In 1997, it was $58 million. In 97, the Indians had the third highest payroll in MLB.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:14 PM

Typical Indians to be in a great position and potentially ruin their biggest offseason in a couple of years

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:14 PM

How's trading brantley, your best hitter from a mediocre lineup improving your team??

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:14 PM

CMac, I see the Indians using their internal options Guilmet, Lee, Blake, etc to fill several of the bullpen openings. Believe they hand out a 1 year guaranteed deal to someone with backend experience as setup or closer. I still think they could be in play for Crain.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:15 PM

I agree jvanek

Madthinker88 December, 6, 2013 12:15 PM

I really hope they land Crain... Solid setup or could step into closer role if needed...

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:15 PM

Believe it or not, the O's had the second highest payroll in 97..

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:15 PM

I'd like to see Rodney brought in, but he's probably asking for too much money

Madthinker88 December, 6, 2013 12:16 PM

Take care all. Need to get back to work :(

Cmac9113 December, 6, 2013 12:16 PM

Crain would definitely be a solid addition, but I'm a little wary to rely on a guy like Guilmet,

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:16 PM

Work? What's that? It's lunch break time!

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:16 PM

Problem with the Indians this offseason is they went into with their #2 and #3 starter and their setup man and closer as free agents. That's four big holes to fill when you are trying to improve on top of it.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:16 PM

I think $5M or less is it for a CL. Can't see Rodney or Balfour signing for that.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:17 PM

Ya, no way that happens

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:17 PM

Brantley is not the Indians best hitter. The best hitters are Santana and Kipnis. And, besides, if they were to trade Brantley, I am sure they would look at a way to replace his production. Who knows, maybe David Murphy was signed to ultimately be that guy.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:18 PM

Here's what the Indians should do: Trade Stubbs for a Minor leaguer, see if they can trade Acab for a minor leaguer. Sign either Arroyo or Colon to a year deal, sign, a cheap lefty specialist and get Hanrahan. I don't think we're asking alot

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:18 PM

Murphy and Brantley are very similar in what the produce. I feel like that's exactly why they signed Murphy

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:18 PM

PLEASE

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:18 PM

Arroyo would give up hundreds of home runs at the Jake

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:18 PM

steve Cishek from the Marlins might be an option. I also heard rumors the Marlins might move Jacob Turner for a bat.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

I think guys like Guilmet, Lee, Wood, etc would be in reduced roles to open the season....I look at them to fill the role Albers had for most of the season as a utility right-hander in the pen that mostly pitched low leverage innings.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

Arroyo would be 14 wins, 4 ERA and 200 innings

Cmac9113 December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

I would rather trade Stubbs than Brantley, but if Stubbs only gets us a #5 starter when Brantley could get us a 3, I trade Brantley.

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

I'd be okay with Cishek

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

going to cost an arm and a leg

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

But Hiram, how does that improve off of last year's team? How does trading Stubbs and Cabrera for minor leaguers improve? How does replacing Smith and Perez with a cheap specialist and a closer coming off of major surgery improve the team?

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

The fact of the matter is, the Indians are taking the approach of waiting around and are going to pick up the scraps that nobody wants. It is is the same mindset that has haunted the Indians in the Shapiro regime. They will wait around and take a chance on a guy that they can get for a cheap price. I am sick and tired of this nonagressive approach to free agency.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:19 PM

Doing that to get rid of salary because really don't need either

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:20 PM

So who replaces ACab?

jberdysz (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:20 PM

Tito and Arroyo go way back though, he probably would cost a lot on this market but don't underestimate the Francona connection

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:20 PM

Cishek is a guy I'd like, but the Marlins appear to be in win mode.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:20 PM

Lindor isn't ready for the bigs

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:20 PM

I agree, I don't think Arroyo is the right fit for the Indians.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:20 PM

Preach Jvanek. An ownership group that doesn't have the business acumen, pockets or will to do what they need to do. Time for Dolans to move on

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:21 PM

Does Texas need a LF? Maybe Brantley entices them for a SP?

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:21 PM

I would have really liked Gregerson.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:21 PM

How did the A's get Gregerson for Seth Smith?!?! That trade made no sense to me

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:21 PM

The hate for the Dolans is amazing to me...

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:21 PM

I think we still need to see what the Indians ultimately do. Once these spending sprees let up, there are going to be some good values left unsigned that might be attractive fits for the Indians. It happens every year.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:22 PM

I'm not asking the Indians to go out and throw stupid money at someone, but in my opinion, I do not see the Indians actively (or urgently) trying to improve this team. Whether we like it or not this game has changed. A small market team like the Indians only chance at winning is to capitalize when the opportunity presents itself.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:22 PM

anichols: You can put Pestano in Smiths role, Keep Allen in the 8th and then Hanrahan in the 9th. I also believe it's a possiblity that Carrasco could be the closer. The biggest thing is getting that #4 starter

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:22 PM

I would also love Kendrys Morales, but there's no room for him on the tribe at all

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:22 PM

Who wants to place bets on when Sizemore signs his minor league deal with the Tribe?

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:23 PM

sub 1 million dollar deal with incentives? I'd be down for that

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:23 PM

FWIW, I think Cody Allen and Bryan Shaw could probably hold their own in the late innings. I'd like to see them add one more late inning arm, but I have a lot of faith in them.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:23 PM

I think that's the approach...waiting and get what's left. I don't like it, but in this mkt I get it. I still think the Tribe will be active in a few trades the next few weeks. They have to add controllable arms.

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:24 PM

And if Pestano can regain form... though that's a big if right now

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:24 PM

Get Colon, he'll cost you a year and option, sign Crain and then get a lefty specialist. Why the Indians didn't sign Wright is beyond me but other guys are out there

jberdysz (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:24 PM

Danny: I know you mentioned Cruz and Morales, but don't forget if the Indians would sign either player it would cost them their first rd draft pick. Don't see either in play because of it unfortunately.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:24 PM

Names like Jamey Carroll? Give me a break

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:24 PM

ya I know, it's sad that we'll miss out on them, but we need those picks.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:24 PM

Indians come out of this with Colon, Crain and a lefty specialist they will be able to compete with anyone. Is this too much to ask?? I don't think so

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:24 PM

I have said it for years, there is not an owner out there who will come to Cleveland and do things much different. Beyond Mike Ilitch.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:25 PM

Which is why if the Indians sign any free agent pitcher, it's going to be Garza. He's still too expensive though

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:25 PM

It's guys out there that would. I disagree with that statement

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:25 PM

Carroll is a depth option, they looked at Theroit last yr. Might give them vet protection if they move ACab.

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:25 PM

It is too much to ask, Hiram, because they don't have the money for it now. And Colon is looking to get paid off of last year's success.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:25 PM

I was always a fan of Carroll, as a depth option he's pretty nice

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:25 PM

Bartolo Colon supposedly wants a guaranteed multi-year deal. Don't see him as a fit with the Indians.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:26 PM

I also don't think he could fit into a uniform

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:26 PM

*ba do chi*

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:26 PM

Sticking pat with this roster and expecting many people to play like they did last year..... 75 wins

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:27 PM

If there was a guy out there Hiram, then the team would already have been sold. Trust me.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:27 PM

anichols: Bottom line it's guys out there that can help this team and let's see if they are willing to go out of their way- like they said they would when the team is close to put them over the top. If not Colon then other guys, this team is so close but it's up to the ownership and if they do something like I mentioned they will lose money but they will get it back many times over

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:27 PM

I could see the Tribe making a play for Garza IF they moved both ACab and Bourn, that would seemingly really dent the lineup.

MHattery (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:27 PM

Yeah, as the roster sits right now, they are an 82 win team.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:28 PM

Hey Tony, do you think Aguilar makes it to Cleveland this year?

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:28 PM

But what does Garza give you? He's an injury concern and pitched really badly for Texas. He'll get paid, but I hope it's not by Cleveland.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:28 PM

Guys say that Tony but Colon has been on a series of one year deals and the prices of the guys is falling because Nathan wanted 26 M, Nolasco wanted 85 M and they didn't get close to that. Prices are falling and the power of negotiation is in place here

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:28 PM

I agree with you on Garza

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:28 PM

Remains to be seen what happens this offseason, but the Indians are going to need to rely on the emergence of guys like Salazar, Allen and maybe other young players in more prominent roles next year

MHattery (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:28 PM

The fear about moving A-Cab is interesting, last year he was replacement level, not league average, replacement level.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:29 PM

The Indians move Acab and Bourn who replaces Bourn??

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:29 PM

I don't see Garza happening. His market is going to take off here really soon. Just don't see them going 4 years for a starter in FA.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:29 PM

This is ACab's contract year. He's going to have a much better year this year. Almost guarenteed

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:29 PM

Grady Sizemore...

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:29 PM

There are concerns with Garza which could limit his mkt, and keep his price down.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:30 PM

I think we are all missing the biggest problem with the Indians, the drafting has been absolutely horrible.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:30 PM

Danny, I think Aguilar will be the first guy called up to fill a need if Swisher, Santana or Gomes get hurt....or if Gomes has a sophomore slump and loses everyday catching duties.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:30 PM

Stubbs or Brantley would replace Bourn. I see stubbs as a fourth outfielder though

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:30 PM

jvanek it's gotten better

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:30 PM

jvanek you are right there. Which is why that extra pick is so important

MHattery (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:30 PM

The contract year bounce theory is a relative myth. Statistically incredibly overstated, major warning signs exist. The plate discipline and athletic decline hurts. Doubt he gets a bounce.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:31 PM

We wouldn't have to add so many pieces if we could add some players internally.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:31 PM

Stubbs: If they felt Stubbs was the answer they would've never signed Bourn

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:31 PM

Would the Nats have interest in ACab? Maybe the Dodgers, if they slide Hanley Ramirez over.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:31 PM

they are on the cusp of doing just that. They've added alot of pieces internally if you think about it

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:31 PM

I'm inclined to keep Cabrera and see if we can get a big year from him in his free agent year. The guy I want to get out from under is Bourn. A poor signing in retrospect. Can't pay a guy like him $13M, which is essentially 1/6 of your payroll!

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:32 PM

true, but look at ACab's history. Sure, he's been in a steady decline since about 2009, but he's been fairly consistent until this year. He really dropped off the map this year, and usually when there's a sudden drop like that the player is more likely to bounce back. Same thing is going to go for David Murphy

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:32 PM

Yeah, Tony wants to replace Bourn with Stubbs, LOL

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:33 PM

I'm okay with keeping Cabrera. I've wanted out from under Bourn's contract since the day after they signed him.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:33 PM

Stubbs and Bourn aren't that different of players

MHattery (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:33 PM

Murphy is an entirely different case, peripherals suggest continued decline for Cabrera, rebound for Murphy.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:33 PM

Hiram, the Bourn signing came up because of a unique opportunity. It didn't affect anything with their thinking of Stubbs. It is not like Stubbs was set to be the leadoff man.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:33 PM

yeah, I'd agree on moving Bourn, not sure who wants him though. Maybe Boston, IF the Tribe takes something ugly back (Dempster).

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:33 PM

Stubbs has more strike outs and more power

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:34 PM

I would 100% rather they sign a guy like Gutierrez then give every day time to Stubbs.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:34 PM

Cabrera's numbers are all very similar to his 2012 numbers across the board. The one glaring difference was the strikeout rate. if that kicks back to career norms, I could definitely see a kick back from him.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:34 PM

Didn't have to sign him Tony

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:34 PM

What kind of year do you think we will see from Gomes/Santana?

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:34 PM

If we could bring back Gut, and trade s

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:34 PM

unfortunately the best option might be to move Brantley and hope Bourn rebounds...then move him.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:34 PM

Stubbs at this stage is a 4th Outfielder at best

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:35 PM

Stubbs, I'd be alright with that

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:35 PM

4th Outfielder if you want a good team

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:35 PM

Well, he's a 5th outfielder right now

jberdysz (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:35 PM

To be honest, I'm ok with giving Bourn another shot even if it's at $13 mil. It was his first yr in the A.L. and you have to think he will swipe more bags as long as he stays healthy next yr. I'd just hate to lose that good veteran presence he brings on the field and in the clubhouse. Unless you can get a mid-tier starter for him, I'm looking forward to another yr from Bourn

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:36 PM

Arencibia to the Rangers

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:36 PM

Dolans are going to have to sac up and spend some money to put this team over the top. They said last year they knew it was going to take 2-3 year commitment by them and we need to see them continue in this area and not repeat what they've done in the past

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:36 PM

THey didn't have to sign Bourn, but like I said before, his pickup was an asset creation for a potential deal down the road. Undermarket deal will look attractice.

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:36 PM

A .316 OBP doesn't give much opportunity to swipe more bags.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:36 PM

I agree Birdman on Bourn. Too many ppl want to rob Peter to pay Paul and to me it's sickening

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:37 PM

No way Bourn stays in Cleveland for his entire contract. If he doesn't get traded this winter, I wouldn't be surprised if he gets moved in the summer

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:37 PM

I prefer to move Bourn since he costs more and the money could be better used elsewhere on the roster, but I think Brantley brings back the best return. Even with that, if a team wants Bourn in a fair deal, I do it yesterday and hold onto Brantley.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:38 PM

Maybe Toney but the bottom line is are you going to be an improved team or are you just moving things around. That's the ultimate question. If Stubbs is in my lineup every day, you simply aren't an improved team

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:38 PM

Yeah Jim, Bourn was haunted this yr with injuries. Just seemed he never got the wheels under him. His value might be lower than originally expected, but he does have some value. I think it's a matter of how the Tribe wants to handle him going forward.

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:38 PM

I go to bed every night thinking of ways the Indians could move Bourn. I just really dislike that deal.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:39 PM

I think Bourn bounces back from last year, he never really seemed comfortable at the plate, or on the base paths. I could see a much better year this year, and it could increase his trade value

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:39 PM

Hard to rob Peter when Peter is broke to begin with. Horrible analogy Hiram.

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:39 PM

Bottom moving Bourn or Brantley to get a starter and putting Stubbs in, YOU AREN'T AN IMPROVED TEAM- simple as that

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:40 PM

lol

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:40 PM

I'm glad you're not our GM Hiram

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:40 PM

I am fine if Stubbs is in everyday lineup hitting 9th and has a mini-platoon with someone to limit his exposure to righties. Him and Bourn are very close in ability and production. Rather use the $10M diff in their salaries to fill other pressing needs.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:40 PM

What happened with his lack of swiping bags? could that lead to struggle at the plate?

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:41 PM

I think it was just more of an adjustment period to the AL. He never looked comfortable

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:41 PM

That trick won't work on me. Stubbs even lost his job last year if I recall and now he's an everyday player,. come on man.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:41 PM

How are you not improved when you replace Bourn with Stubbs (who had almost identical numbers to Bourn) and get a much needed improvement or two elsewhere?

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:42 PM

Alright question: If the Rays would trade us David Price for Lindor, would you do it?

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:42 PM

if they thought Stubbs was the answer he wouldn't have lost his job last year, no need to sign Murphy or Bourn. Come on Tony

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:42 PM

I don't buy the adjustment thing. Bourn strikes me as a guy in decline and someone who I have always felt has been vastly over-rated.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:42 PM

As I said above, maybe something like Bourn for Dempster gets a deal done.

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:42 PM

Danny.. no. Two years of Price wouldn't do it for me. I'd rather keep Lindor.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:43 PM

Ugh, please not Dempster haha. I think we could probably get a better return than that

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:43 PM

I don't trade for Price. it is a two-year pickup. Not interested in that and the cost in players it would lead to.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:43 PM

I agree Azajac, that was just the potential offer that Jim Bowden had in an article on ESPN a couple of weeks ago

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:43 PM

the Tribe could go salary dump like the Orioles did with Jim Johnson and get a A ball prospect in return.

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:43 PM

Not to mention he'll make about $30 million the next two years in arbitration. Not exactly cheap.

daingean December, 6, 2013 12:43 PM

If I could sign Price for 7 years......then i'd think about it.........

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:44 PM

Tony you knew he struck out alot and yet you advocated signing him, SMH

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:45 PM

I'd offer Santana and Brantley for Price

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:45 PM

No way. Are you nuts?

jberdysz (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:45 PM

Exactly, as much as I would love to see an ace southpaw in the rotation after Kaz left, the price for Price is way too high. Jeff Samardzija would be a better route imo.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:46 PM

no way we move Santana, just no way

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:46 PM

Price only makes sense longterm

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:46 PM

Hiram, I don't recall ever campaigning to sign Bourn. Always said he would be an interesting pickup, but never really bought into that he would be a great pickup.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:46 PM

Santana's contract is way to team friendly to move him

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:46 PM

I don't know where they are going to play Santana

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:47 PM

1b / DH

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:47 PM

Santana is way too important to the lineup too. He's the one real legit scary bat they have. Top 25 bat in baseball.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:47 PM

unless he can handle 3B, he's due to be 1B/DH

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:47 PM

supposedly he's been looking good at 3B, prior to playing actual games

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:47 PM

Hey, if Miguel cabrera can play 3B......

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:47 PM

Tony already knew that though haha

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:48 PM

Santana will play 50-60 games at catcher....another 20-40 at 1B....the rest at DH. Easy to get him in.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:48 PM

So if they decide to add a bat......what position do you think would make the most sense?

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:48 PM

Tony, you and I sat up there and talked at ST and you said sign Bourn because of his WAR. I said no way and if the Indians wanted to sign anyone then it should've been Lohse. I remember like it was yesterday. That's not the point though Tony. The point is that the Indians have to show that they are improved team from the end of last year and trading guys and moving guys is fun but at the end of the day, are you a better team when ST rolls around?? That's the key question and the bottom line

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:48 PM

Important to remember that while GOmes is the starter, he's not starting 130+ games there. Santana will get 40-60 starts there (Gomes DHs often).

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:49 PM

I don't see a bat being added until they add a starter and a reliever. Bat is a secondary need.

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:49 PM

Not sure why we're fighting about things in the past we can't even change.....

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:50 PM

I agree with the bat Tony, I can tell you that when Interviewed on MLB Tonight Antonetti said SP and two RP's

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:50 PM

Hiram, you are probably mixing me up with someone else. I've never been a huge proponent of Bourn.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:50 PM

Because it's Hiram, that's why

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:50 PM

Ok Tony

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:51 PM

Ya, the main focus of this offseason has always been to add pitching. Pitching wins baseball. We've lost too many pitchers to be content with not adding any

hiramb December, 6, 2013 12:51 PM

I admit it's tough seeing teams doing things but still plenty of talent out there to get and plenty of time to get them. I think we need to be fair and see what they do before we bad mouth the Indians

MHattery (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:51 PM

A lot of people forget that Tribe's offense was 6th in runs scored in MLB in 2013. Only change is addition of Murphy. pitching is absolute priority.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:51 PM

i agree, but still Price would be an interesting add. Point is it would be high cost.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:51 PM

I think we need to at least try to get jeff samardzija, he would be the ideal candidate for the tribe to target

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 12:52 PM

Sounds like Mike Napoli might be finding his new home with Marlins, Mariners, Rangers and Red Sox competing for his services.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:52 PM

The Indians have holes in their lineup.....but the holes on the pitching staff are much bigger and more important to address right now....so that is where I spend all of my resources.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:53 PM

I would rather get pitching now, rely on the bats we have, and then upgrade if we need to over the summer

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:53 PM

How much $$ do you think we have to spend this offseason?

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:53 PM

plus, we've got some guys down in the minors who are dying to make a splash with the Tribe

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:53 PM

Samardzja really interests me

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:53 PM

Aguilar makes me so excited, and Moncrief.

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:54 PM

I'm not as high on Moncrief as a lot of other folks are.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:54 PM

Have you seen him play at Akron though? That dude has a canon

MHattery (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:54 PM

Totally agree tony, although I think holes have become overplayed, people are not cognizant of the offensive decline over the past five years. Strong lineup depth.

azajac (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:55 PM

Has a great arm and the power potential is there... but remember his age. And he also strikeouts his fair share too.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:55 PM

I believe when all is said and done, the Indians payroll is at $85M next year. That is a few million above last year even in a year when attendance went DOWN after a playoff season. They are at $84M right now, so obviously have to make some moves to free up salary.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:55 PM

I did not know that he was already 25, that is slightly dissappointing

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:56 PM

Yeah, I am more bullish on Aguilar helping at some point this season than Moncrief. Moncrief probably not an option until mid-2015 unless a rash of injuries occur.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:57 PM

Michael, that's the important thing. People are still thinking like it is 2005 when guys regularly hit .300 or hit 30-40HR or had 100 RBI or had 900 OPS. That is rare now....I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I think the players in all of those categories has dropped in half.

jvanek December, 6, 2013 12:57 PM

Roll Tribe

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:57 PM

I've been high on Aguilar since he was in single A. Buster Olney wrote a smaller exert about him a couple years ago. I'm just ready for him to be in Cleveland

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:58 PM

I would love if the Indians tried to get Nick Franklin from Seattle now, to play third.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 12:59 PM

I'm still hoping Lonnie has a break out year this year....

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 12:59 PM

Aguilar needs some more time but could get to Cleveland at some point this year. Important not to expect too much though. he's not a big time prospect and more of the potential to be a complementary player, not a significant guy. He could always be more.....which would be great....and why you lower the expectatoins a little.

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 1:00 PM

Alright everyone, gotta go back to work

danny_madden December, 6, 2013 1:00 PM

Nice chatting with you all, have a good day

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 1:02 PM

Yeah, I think at this point the Indians will go with Lonnie at 3B. I think one thing to think about with Santana experiment at 3B is that Indians may be thinking of him there to sit Chiz against lefties and also because Aviles not in play there because they may be viewing him as their starting shortstop if Cabrera is traded.

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 1:02 PM

Andy, do you think Brantley for Maurer and Franklin would work?

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 1:03 PM

tony, I think your foreshadowing what could happen. That explains interest in Jamey Carroll.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 1:04 PM

Franklin is intriguing

anichols (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 1:04 PM

Franklin was a top 100 prospect in some eyes going into 2013, so probably not. I assume he'll be part of the proposed package to Tampa for Price. But I would sure like it if Cleveland tried to acquire him.

MHattery (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 1:04 PM

2008:
29 guys with a 100 RBI's 28 guys with at least 31 homeruns
2013:
15 guys with a 100 RBI's10 guys with 31 homeruns,14 with 30 homeruns

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 1:04 PM

Justin Turner might be another UTL option he plays all four INF spots and LF.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 1:05 PM

Yeah, the Santana experiment to me is a key into some of their thinking. Would seem to imply they are thinking of either trading Aviles or that Aviles is out of play in a platoon role because he is going to be the regular shortstop.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 1:06 PM

My assumptions were correct, thanks Michael. And there is yet another example why you have to look at the numbers guys put up through a different lens.

tlastoria (ADMIN) December, 6, 2013 1:06 PM

Gonna wrap this up....that hour went fast!

Wahoo Preacher December, 6, 2013 1:06 PM

Thanks for the time.

The Winter Meetings kick up on Sunday.,...hopefully we see much more activity from the Indians in the coming days.

Thanks everyone.....might try and do this on a weekly basis going forward. Might still need to tweak a few things.

Yeah, I don't see Tejeda being an option in Rule 5. Upper 80s guys are not the norm.....teams typically reach and select the upper 90s power arm guys.

Small chance. Very affective P, light on velo. Rule 5 picks are largely power arms.

Any chance Enosil Tejeda gets taken in the rule 5? .89 ERA at Akron has to count for something.

Justin Turner is a FA to watch for the Tribe. At the end of the year when the Mets played the Indians, Turner in 12 AB had 5 hits that included 2HRS, and showed real spark on the bases. He hit for an average of .280, can play 3B and many other positions, is 29, and is a right handed bat!!!
