Corey Kluber struck out a season high 11 batters and didn't allow a hit in his 6.2 innings to lead the Clippers to a 5-2 victory over the Patwucket Red Sox.
Kluber (7-8) also walked five and was pulled from the game in the seventh after throwing 113 pitches. Chen-Chang Lee retired the final batter of the seventh but allowed the Paw Sox's first hit in the eighth - a single to Luis Exposito.
The Clippers jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Patwucket got back into it. In the first, Jerad Head delivered an RBI single for an early one run lead. One inning later, three consecutive Clippers singled to load the bases for Luis Valbuena. He promptly unloaded them with a grand slam over the right field wall.
Zach Putnam came on in the ninth and retired the first two Paw Sox hitters. He then loaded the bases and gave up a single to Exposito, which made it a three run game.
Josh Judy came in to face the tying run in Jose Iglesias, and forced him to ground out to end the game. It marks Judy's twentieth save of the season.
After the Clippers took the opening game of the series, the two teams will play three more. The first pitch for Wednesday's game is at 7:05 PM.
