The Good…
There isn’t a better player going right now than Tony Wolters. He may be the best player in the entire organization right now, as he’s just lacing the baseball. The fact that he skipped a level to get to Carolina has gone from a negative to a positive as he proves that the Indians have made the right move. He clearly has a lot of room to grow, but it seems as though he takes major steps every game. The only thing missing from his game right now is the power, and he still has that gap power that can get him doubles and speed to get him some triples. The best thing about Wolters is his attitude, and as long as he stays as positive as he has been this season, there’s no reason to think he won’t be a major leaguer in two or three seasons.
Bo Greenwell isn’t the prospect that his Dad was, but he certainly has a nice minor league skill set. This is his third season in the Carolina League, and the trait that he’s shown at all levels has been the ability to hit for average out of the gate. Right now, he’s hitting the ball a ton, and showing a bit of power, although it’s not enough to take him to the next level. Greenwell is more advanced than some of the other guys on the team, but he’ll never really be that type of prospect that is a lock for the bigs. Still, you have to like his style of play. He really needs to stay consistent, and hope for the best.
Most of you are probably sick of me talking about Carlos Moncrief, but I’m telling you, this kid could be the best of the prospects in Carolina right now, especially with Jesus Aguilar scuffling right now. He’s rolling right now, and in the past two weeks, is hitting .359, with 10 runs, two doubles, four homers and 11 RBI. He’s struck out eleven times, but he’s actually walked nine times, which has lifted his OBP to .479. His OPS is a sick 1.197 over the stretch since last we talked, and it looks like the toolsy outfielder is starting to make the Tribe brass take notice. With the state the Tribe outfield is in, you have to believe that he can move quickly through the system, if he maintains this momentum.
…the Bad and the Ugly…
Giovanny Urshela is a guy that I could really get behind if he could ever maintain that offense over a long period of time. While he often will show off a nice, quick swing, his old habits often rear their ugly head. He isn’t seeing the ball well right now, and he’s become a liability at the plate. He has to showcase consistency to ever have a chance to start, and not be a defensive replacement.
Jesus Aguilar has been extremely disappointing over the past two weeks. He’s hitting only .188, over his past 10 games, without a homer and only two RBI. He’s walked eight times, and struck out nine times, which shows that he’s still taking his walks better than in the past, but the offense has to be a bit disconcerting for the big first baseman. He’s still a legit top five guy in the system, but perhaps stamina is an issue at this point, and he plays in the hot Carolina summer.

The Good…
If I say it once, I’ll say it again, Danny Salazar has the potential to be a big time starter. It’s hard right now to call him that though, as he’s still building up his arm. Still, the kid has a bunch of intangibles that are promising, and has continued to pitch really well. It will be interesting to see if they keep him in the four inning range this season, or if they open it up to five innings, plus.
Mike Rayl has been an intriguing option, as well as Michael Goodnight. The two of them have been joined at the hip over the past couple of seasons. Rayl is ahead of Goodnight right now, and made an outstanding start this past week. He’s still struggling for consistency, but seems to make more and more strides as he advances through the system. He’s not a stud starter, but he is an innings filler.
…the Bad and the Ugly…
Rob Nixon got a rough start to his career in Carolina. He got ripped for nine hits and eight runs in his second appearance over an inning and two thirds. He had two other outings that were much, much better, but boy, what a welcome.

The View Astern:
In the land of relief pitchers, Shawn Armstrong is another guy that ran right through Carolina on his way to Cleveland. Cody Allen started the run of elite arms, and Shawn Armstrong isn’t far behind him. He’s not quite the pitcher that Allen is, but he’s got many of the same traits. He’s in Akron right now, and likely won’t be long their either. It’s distinctly possible that the bullpen in Cleveland will have both Allen and Armstrong. Now, we’ve got Grant Sides…the next elite arm. There are many…and many more coming…
