MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons (28-29) took advantage of three errors by the Lake County Captains (19-38) and hit two homeruns to take the middle game of the series 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. Just like the series last week, the Loons have won the first two games of the series.

Right-hander Dace Kime started for the Captains in search of his first win of the year. Kime was opposed by Jordan Hershiser, son of Orel Hershiser, for Great Lakes Loons.

Centerfielder Jacob Scavuzzo drew first blood in the first inning with his third homer of the season. Great Lakes opened a 1-0 lead two batters into the inning.

Hershiser threw two scoreless innings in his first start of his career. He allowed one hit and two walks along with three strikeouts. Luis Chirinos came on for the third inning.

Lake County tied the game with one swing of the bat in the fifth inning. Third baseman Grant Fink hit his fifth homerun of the year, a solo shot to left field to give him 26 runs batted in this season.

Great Lakes quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Designated hitter Malcolm Holland walked and stole second and third with two outs. Scavuzzo reached second on a fielding error by left fielder Dorssys Paulino, and Holland scored on the play. Catcher Kyle Farmer singled home Scavuzzo to take a 3-1 lead.

Chirinos threw three innings of one-run ball to pick up his fourth win of the year. He gave up one run on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Ralston Cash relieved for the sixth and retired all six batters he faced.

Kime exited after six innings and fell to 0-8 on the year. Kime gave up three runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and a season-high eight strikeouts. Southpaw Wander Beras relieved Kime in the seventh.

Beras had some trouble in the seventh as Great Lakes added some insurance runs. Scavuzzo reached on a fielding error by second baseman Claudio Bautista. The next batter, Farmer drilled a two-out, two-run homer to left field. Farmer’s second homerun of the year made the score 5-1 in the Loon’s favor.

In the eighth, center fielder Clint Frazier greeted Loons’ reliever Victor Araujo with his second homerun of the year. Frazier’s second homer came exactly one month after his first on May 1st. Frazier completed the scoring at 5-2.

Beras gave up two unearned runs on one hit in two innings of relief work. Araujo closed out the game with one run allowed in two innings via the homerun.

Lake County only managed five hits in the game, with three players accounting for them. Frazier and Bautista had two hits in the game. Fink added the other hit.

The Captains will look to avoid the sweep on Monday night. Lefty Luis Lugo (2-4, 5.22) will toe the rubber for the Captains and will face RHP Zachary Bird (3-7, 4.42) for the Loons. First pitch from Dow Diamond is set for 7:05 PM.
