CHARLOTTE- The Charlotte Knights sent the Columbus Clippers packing Sunday afternoon, winning 6-3 and splitting the four-game series 2-2. Daisuke Matsuzaka wasn’t able to get the win in his second start after a long stint on the DL.

Charlotte jumped on the scoreboard first in the third inning. Blake Tekotte led off the inning with a walk from Matsuzaka. Dewayne Wise followed with a single, moving Tekotte to third during the play. Matsuzaka loaded the bases without an out when he hit Carlos Sanchez to load the bases. Brent Moral cleared the bases with a big double for the Knights with a double and giving the Knights a 3-0 lead. Matsuzaka then settled down and retired the next three batters in order to end the inning.

Columbus didn’t waste any returning the favor. In the top of the fourth, Matt Carson and Lonnie Chisenhall both led off the inning with singles. After a Cord Phelps infield single, Jeremy Hermida blasted his team-leading 11th homer of the season, a three run bomb to right field that tied the score at threes.

Matsuzaka gave up a lead-off homer in the fourth, then settled down and struck out the next two batters. Matsuzaka came out of the game after the strikeouts, thanks to a pitch count. Paolo Espino took the mound, striking out his first batter to end the fourth.

The seventh inning sealed the Clipper’s fate when reliever Espino allowed the winning runs to be scored. Espino walked the first two batters up then loaded the bases when former Indians minor leaguer Lars Anderson hit a single to right field. Tyler Green followed with a two-run single, ending Espino’s day. Scott Barnes relieved, and recorded three straight outs to end the inning, and the scoring.

The loss Sunday cost Columbus their place in the International League West standings, the Clippers now sit at third bellow the Louisville Bats by one game. The Clippers return home Monday to face the Pawtucket Red Sox. Monday’s game will kick off an eight game home stance at Huntington Park.
