Winston-Salem, NC – The Carolina Mudcats failed to find a solution to foil the red-hot Winston-Salem Dash, dropping an 11-1 decision on Thursday night at BB&T Ballpark in the final game of the season series.
The Dash (19-16, 63-40) finished 14-6 in the 2012 regular season against the Mudcats (17-17, 49-55) after sweeping the four-game series. Winston-Salem claimed eight of the 10 games played at BB&T Ballpark.
Erik Johnson (1-1) dealt six scoreless innings in his second outing for Winston-Salem. The right-hander scattered three hits and struck out seven.
Mike Rayl (6-8) allowed four runs over four innings in the loss. The starter allowed an RBI-single to Kevan Smith, who had a debut to remember with Winston-Salem. Rayl surrendered a two-run blast to Trayce Thompson that capped a three-run third, and gave the Dash a 4-0 lead.
Smith finished off his impressive night with a grand slam in the sixth inning against reliever Rob Nixon. The towering shot to left field was the highlight of a seven-run inning for the Dash.
The Mudcats broke up the shut out in the ninth against reliever Kevin Vance. Carlos Moncrief tripled to lead off the frame, and scored on a single by Tyler Cannon.
Carolina opens a three-game series at Wilmington tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. The Mudcats return home July 31 to host Myrtle Beach for three games. Tickets are available through the box office by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
