SCRANTON - The Columbus Clippers faced the Scranton/WB Yankees Wednesday in their third game out of four in the series, and the Clippers fell to the Yankees in a close one, 2-1.  Columbus was only able to put together two hits all night.

The Clippers got a spot start from lefty Eric Berger (0-1) as the Yankees countered with Dellin Betances (2-2).

Columbus struck first in this game, as in the top of the first inning with no outs second basemen Cord Phelps led the game off with his second homerun of the season to put the Clipps up 1-0.

The Yankees quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning. They tied the game up on a sacrifice fly hit by second basemen Kevin Russo which brought home speedy left fielder Brett Gardner across home plate.

In the bottom half of the fourth inning, first basemen Steve Pearce led the inning off with a towering home run to left field, his fifth of the 2012 campaign.

After six strong innings, Berger’s night was over after allowing only two runs on three hits, three walks, and piling up six strikeouts.

After Betances threw a solid eight innings, he was replaced by the Yankees’ closer Kevin Whelan.  Betances final stat line for the night was eight innings, two hits, one earned run, and seven strikeouts.  Whelan was able to shut the Clippers down in order to pick up his eight save of the season.

The Clippers will play the Yankees Thursday as they look to pick up a win in order to split the series in Scranton.  This game is at 1:05 pm EST.
