BUFFALO, NY – The Columbus Clippers (42-39) needed a win on Friday night to earn a split against the Buffalo Bisons (41-39), but did not have enough offense.  Buffalo backed a strong performance from starter P.J. Walters (2-0, 1.50) en route to a 7-1 victory over the Clippers at Coca-Cola Field.

When Tyler Holt was on his hot streak earlier in the season, he was batting second in the batting order behind Jose Ramirez.  But Ramirez went on the Disabled List, Holt was moved to the leadoff position and has since struggled batting .150 (6-40) since 6/13, while still reaching base at a .406 clip.

He’s not known for his power; his career high in home runs is just two (twice, 2011 and 2013).  When he homered earlier this season, a line drive that barely cleared the centerfield wall in Huntington Park, it came as a shock.

But none of that mattered in the first inning of Friday night’s game in Buffalo when Tyler Holt dispatched the third pitch of the ball game over the left field wall, tying his career high.

But that was the only offense the Clippers would get on Friday night and until the fifth inning that was all they needed.  Tyler Holt would come up big again, leaping at the wall to rob extra bases from Andy LaRoche to lead off the inning.

He got another opportunity when the next batter, Ryan Schimpf, hit one his way.  But Holt misjudged his distance from the wall and when he leapt, the wall blocked him from being able to reach a home run ball that just barely made over the wall and tied the game.

After Ryan Goins singled to center, Darin Mastroianni bounced one just out Kyle Davies’ reach forcing Ryan Rohlinger to charge the ball.  The hurried throw to first went wide of the first baseman and into the dugout putting runners on second and third with one out.  Adron Chambers gave Buffalo the lead for good on a groundout to second that scored Goins.

Buffalo added on in the eighth, putting up five runs on returning reliever Mark Lowe, who pitched for the first time since being optioned by Cleveland on Thursday.

Kyle Davies (4-5, 3.59) cruised before the fifth.  He gave up a hit and a walk in the first, but went the next three innings hitless, allowing just a walk.  He ended his night after six innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and a pair of walks with five strikeouts.  The start was his fifth consecutive quality start and seventh in ten starts with the Clippers.

The Clippers head to Toledo for pair against the Mud Hens at Fifth Third Field beginning at 7:00 PM on Saturday night.  Right-hander Tyler Cloyd (5-4, 4.73) gets the ball for Columbus for his 15th start and 16th appearance.

Cloyd pitched seven innings in his last start against Lehigh Valley on Sunday and allowed four runs.  He gave up one homer against his former team which kept him in the lead in the International League with 16 home runs allowed this season.  He has given up five in his last three starts, but has won two of those starts.  In his only start against Toledo this season, Cloyd gave up eight runs over five innings and took the loss.
