The Cleveland Indians today announced that they have added outfielder Jason Kubel to the to the major league roster. To make room for him on the 25-man roster they have optioned right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco to Triple-A Columbus. The Indians already added Kubel to the 40-man roster on Friday when they placed lefty Scott Barnes on the 60-day disabled list.

Kubel, 31, was acquired yesterday from the Arizona Diamondbacks and reported to Detroit last night. Carrasco tossed 1.1 scoreless innings last night and for the year has now tossed 10.1 scoreless relief innings pitched.  He is eligible to return to the Major League roster on September 3rd.

In other news, first baseman David Cooper has opted out of his minor league contract. He signed with the Indians earlier this month but had a clause in his contract where if he was not added to the major league roster by the end of August he could opt out and become a free agent. Cooper is hitting .314 with a .736 OPS in 13 games in the minors, though is only hitting .192 with a .442 OPS in seven games at Columbus.

Carrasco has looked pretty sharp as a late inning guy. I think he is the kind of guy who has if he is really focused he has the arm and stuff to be effective. Set-up and closing, one pitch, one batter at a time is a great way to train your ability to focus. I think if Chen comes up, Carrasco should stay in Columbus and focus on set/up closing. I would have let Rich Hill go and brought up Crockett and or Hagadone. I am over the Hill.
