LYNCHBURG, Va. –– In what was a back-and-forth game throughout, the Carolina Mudcats relied on a ninth-inning score from Jerrud Sabourin to earn a 4-3 win against the Lynchburg Hillcats Wednesday night.

With the score deadlocked at three, Sabourin knocked a single into right field to leadoff the ninth inning. The Carolina designated hitter then stole second base and moved to third on a Yhoxian Medinasingle that set up the deciding score for the Mudcats. Luigi Rodriguez came through in the clutch and brought Sabourin home with an infield single to put Carolina on top for good.

Grant Sides came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth and kept the Hillcats at bay to preserve the narrow win and earn the save.

The win came as the eighth in nine games for the Mudcats. Wednesday night's victory moves Carolina (17-10, 46-48) two games ahead of Myrtle Beach in the Southern Division.

Jacob Lee (2-0, 3.12 ERA) was credited with the win after hurling 1.2 scoreless innings in which he allowed only two hits.

Carolina starter D.J. Brown put together a solid outing on his way to a no decision. The right hander surrendered two earned runs off of six hits in 6.1 innings of play.

Lynchburg's Brady Feigl (0-1, 9.00 ERA) shouldered a loss after giving up the decisive run in the top of the ninth.
Lucas Sims lasted 7.0 innings in his 12th start of the year and gave up three earned runs off of six hits and two walks. The Hillcats' starter managed to fan seven Mudcat batters in the process.

The Hillcats opened the scoring with a first-inning run from Eric Garcia. The Lynchburg leadoff man reached second and then scored thanks to a fielding error from centerfielder Todd Hankins and back-to-back singles from Emerson Landoni and Jose Martinez.

Lynchburg added another run in the bottom of the second to make it 2-0. Tyler Tewell singled to center and moved to second after Daniel Carroll was hit by a pitch to put the Hillcats back in business. Blake Brown then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners before Erica Garcia plated Tewell with a single up the middle.

But Carolina responded with two scores of its own in the top of the fourth. Erik Gonzalez got one back after a triple to deep right and a wild pitch from Lucas Sims. Joe Sever then doubled to center and was scored by a Jeremy Lucas single to even the game at two runs apiece.

The Mudcats continued to battle and manufactured another run in the following frame. A single from Luigi Rodriguez and a double from Todd Hankins put runners on the corners for Carolina. Erik Gonzalez cashed in with a sacrifice fly to right that gave the Mudcats a 3-2 lead.

The Hillcats went on to bring the game level with a seventh inning double and score from Daniel Carroll. The run proved meaningless as the Mudcats managed to fight back with their late score to ultimately win the game.

The Carolina Mudcats are set to return to action Thursday night in Lynchburg. Adam Plutko is set to start for Carolina and is expected to face Lynchburg's Cody Scarpetta. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
